Chapter 7 - Unearthing the Past

The following week, federal investigators executed a second, more thorough search of the Whitmore estate under a federal warrant tied to the missing persons case of Sarah Lin.
I agreed to meet Agent Miller from the FBI's financial crimes division at the property to officially verify my personal property inventory and ensure no fraudulent documents remained attached to my title deeds.
The estate looked desolate in the afternoon light. The police tape was gone, but the heavy iron gates stood open, and the sprawling gardens looked neglected without the daily attention of hired groundskeepers who had all fled after the arrests.
Agent Miller met me on the front porch, shaking my hand firmly. "Mrs. Vance. Thanks for coming out. We've wrapped up the primary forensic sweep of the basement."
"Did you find anything else regarding Sarah?" I asked, looking toward the darkened side entrance.
"We found enough to guarantee that Charles and Adrian won't see daylight for a very long time," Agent Miller said grimly, opening a folder to show me a series of printed photographs. "Sarah didn't run away to Europe. When Adrian realized she was planning to leave him and take her independent inheritance with her, he and Charles drugged her, took her passport, and locked her in the basement vault while they systematically liquidated her accounts. She managed to escape one night—three years ago—and caught a freight train out of the county. She's currently living under an assumed name in Oregon, terrified to come forward because Charles threatened to ruin her family if she ever spoke."
A chill ran down my spine. "She was living in constant fear of them."
"Until now," Agent Miller replied, closing the folder. "Our agents located her yesterday morning in Portland. She's agreed to cooperate fully with the federal prosecutor. Her testimony, combined with the financial trails and the security footage from your home, makes this an airtight RICO case against the entire Whitmore family."
"And the house?" I asked.

"The federal government has placed a full forfeiture lien on the property as proceeds of illegal financial operations," Miller said. "It will be auctioned off, and the restitution will go directly to Sarah and other victims of their fraud scheme."
I looked out across the manicured lawn where, just days ago, a room full of arrogant relatives had casually carved up my life as if it belonged to them. Their empire was gone. Their wealth was frozen. And their freedom was entirely forfeit.
