Chapter 9 - Justice Delivered

The midnight air was biting cold as a convoy of four unmarked federal SUVs and two local police cruisers rolled silently toward the abandoned industrial warehouse off Maple Street. The area was dark, filled with rusting shipping containers and towering brick structures that cast long, ominous shadows under the amber glow of streetlights.
In the lead command vehicle, I sat beside Agent Miller, watching the tactical monitors display thermal imaging of the warehouse interior.
"We have movement," one of the tactical officers whispered over the radio channel. "Three individuals matching the description of Brandon Vance, Gertrude Vance, and Hailey Vance just entered through the side loading dock. Two unknown armed associates are meeting them inside."
"Stand by for breach," Miller commanded, gripping his tactical rifle. He turned to me. "Stay in the vehicle, Charlotte. We'll wrap this up in five minutes."
"I'm staying right here watching," I whispered, locking my eyes on the live thermal feed.
On the screen, I watched as Brandon, Gertrude, and Hailey gesticulated wildly in the center of the warehouse floor, arguing with two heavy-set men in dark jackets. Even without audio, I could see the panic radiating from Gertrude and the pathetic way Brandon cowered behind his mother as one of the armed associates shoved him against a concrete pillar.
They thought they were partners in crime. They were just disposable pawns.
"Breach, breach, breach!" Miller's voice roared over the radio.
Bam!
The heavy metal doors of the warehouse blew open in a cloud of dust and blinding flash-bang grenades. Deafening concussive pops echoed across the concrete yard as federal agents swarmed the building from all sides.
"FBI! Federal agents! On the ground! Do not move!"
On the thermal monitor, the chaotic scramble lasted less than thirty seconds. The two armed associates were pinned to the floor before they could even draw their weapons. Brandon dropped straight to his knees, throwing his hands over his head with a pathetic wail. Gertrude shrieked, collapsing dramatically onto a stack of wooden pallets, while Hailey burst into hysterical tears as zip-ties were locked tightly around her wrists.
Agent Miller opened the command vehicle door and turned to me. "It's over, Charlotte. Let's go see them off."
I stepped out of the SUV, the crisp night air filling my lungs as I walked proudly toward the open loading dock of the warehouse.
As the federal agents escorted the handcuffed trio out into the harsh light of the police cruisers, Brandon looked up and saw me standing there. His eyes were wide with total, utter despair.
"Char... please... tell them it's a misunderstanding! Tell them we're family!" Brandon sobbed, stumbling forward before an officer firmly guided him into the back of a transport van.
Gertrude glared at me with pure venom, spitting curses as she was pushed past me. "You ruined us! You ungrateful bitch, you'll pay for this!"
"No, Gertrude," I said, stepping forward so the harsh overhead light caught my face clearly. "You spent ten years making everyone else pay. Now, you finally pay for yourselves."
Hailey was sobbing uncontrollably, her influencer glam smeared with dirt and tears, as she was bundled into the second van.
Agent Miller walked up beside me, handing me a sealed manila envelope containing the final seizure warrants and asset forfeiture documents.

"Everything they stole, every hidden account, every fraudulent title—it's all being frozen and seized by the federal government," Miller said softly. "You and Skylar are completely, permanently protected."
I took a deep, shuddering breath, looking up at the starlit San Bernardino sky. The nightmare was finally, truly over.
