Chapter 8 - The Federal Sweep

Agent Miller appeared from the security doors within ninety seconds, his sharp eyes taking in my breathless appearance, Skylar clinging tightly to my neck, and the open screen of my phone displaying the threat from the syndicate.

"Charlotte? What is this?" Miller asked, stepping forward and flashing his badge to the desk sergeant. "What's going on?"

"Brandon and his family weren't just skimming my accounts, Agent Miller," I said, my voice ringing clear and steady in the sterile lobby. "They were running a full-scale money-laundering and identity-theft hub out of my basement. Stacks of cash, fake laptops, encrypted satellite communications—and they just threatened my daughter because I locked them out of the house."

Miller’s expression hardened instantly from professional curiosity to tactical urgency. He looked at Skylar, gently patting her shoulder. "You're safe here, sweetheart. Let's get you and your mom into a secure briefing room right now."

Within ten minutes, a tactical response team was assembled around Miller's desk. I plugged my laptop in and downloaded the high-definition video footage I had taken of the basement cache, along with the encrypted satellite messages and the threatening text logs.

"My God," Miller muttered, staring at the screen as the video panned across the bricks of hundred-dollar bills and the labeled identity laptops. "This isn't just local fraud. This is tied to the Viper Network—an international syndicate we've been trying to infiltrate for over a year. Your husband was small-time muscle acting as a local drop point."

"I don't care what they were," I said, leaning over the desk with absolute determination in my eyes. "I want them stopped. All of them. Brandon, Gertrude, Hailey, and whoever sent that text."

"We can use the satellite phone," Miller said, snapping his fingers. "If you received that text, the phone is still pinging from your basement or somewhere nearby. They don't know you brought it here, do they?"

"No," I replied. "It's sitting right inside my laptop bag."

Miller grinned—a sharp, grim smile of a hunter closing in on his prey. "Then let's set the trap."

Working with the federal cyber-crime unit, Miller's team drafted a return message to the syndicate's handler, making it look as though I had complied with their demands out of fear:

“I left the hardware and the cash in the designated trash bin at Maple and 4th. Leave us alone.”

Within two minutes, the handler replied:

“Smart girl. Stay in your hotel room and keep your mouth shut, or things get much worse.”

Using the GPS ping of the incoming reply, combined with the tracking data from the satellite phone in my bag, the cyber unit instantly triangulated the handler's exact physical location: an industrial warehouse off the industrial corridor in San Bernardino, less than three miles from my house.

And even better—the tracking data showed that Brandon, Gertrude, and Hailey had all just arrived at that exact same location to meet their handlers after being locked out of my home.

"All right, tactical team, move out," Miller barked into his radio, standing up and strapping on his tactical vest. "We're hitting the warehouse now."

"Can I come?" I asked quietly.

Miller looked at me, about to refuse, but seeing the unyielding fire in my eyes, he nodded slowly. "Stay in the lead command vehicle with me. You're going to watch your family get what's coming to them."
