Chapter 8 - The Grand Vision

One year later.
The Grand Ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel in Rome was filled with crystal chandeliers, floral arrangements of white roses and eucalyptus, and three hundred distinguished guests from across Europe and America.
It was the inaugural gala for the Elena & Clara Foundation for Maternal & Child Health—an international non-profit organization Julian and I had co-founded to build emergency shelters, healthcare clinics, and legal aid centers for abused mothers and children across the globe.
I stood at the polished mahogany podium, wearing an elegant emerald green evening gown, my dark hair styled in an updo, looking out over the crowded room.
Sitting at the front VIP table was my family.
Julian sat in his dark tuxedo, looking at me with absolute pride shining in his eyes. Beside him was four-year-old Maya, wearing a matching green dress, and two-year-old Theo, looking handsome in his tiny bow tie. Beside them sat my cousin Susan, whom we had flown out from Seattle to join our new life in Italy.
I took a deep breath, speaking clearly into the microphone.
"Two years ago," I began, my voice echoing warmly through the quiet ballroom, "I was a woman standing in an airport with two hundred and seventy-four Euros in my purse, a terrified toddler in my arms, and a fading bruise on my child's head. I believed that the world was a place of dark corners, where power was used to hurt, isolate, and control."
I looked directly at Julian, a soft smile touching my lips.
"Then I met a man who taught me a very different lesson. He taught me that true power is not measured by the size of your fortune or the fear you command. True power is measured by your capacity to protect the vulnerable, to heal the broken, and to stand as an unyielding wall against injustice."
The room erupted into warm, sustained applause.
"Tonight," I continued, gesturing to the foundation banner behind me, "we launch twelve new emergency shelters across Europe and North America—places where no mother will ever have to choose between enduring violence or sleeping on a street corner with her children. Places where safety is not a luxury, but a human right."
As the crowd stood up in a standing ovation, Julian stood up from the table, taking my hand as I stepped down from the stage.
He pulled me into his arms right in front of the glittering crowd, kissing me with a fierce, tender devotion that made my heart soar.
"You were extraordinary tonight, Mrs. Vale," Julian whispered against my lips.

"We make a good team, Mr. Vale," I teased gently, leaning against his chest.
"The best," he agreed, holding me tight.
