Chapter 7 - The Seeds of Tomorrow

Six months later. December in Rome.

A soft, powdery snow was falling over the ancient roofs of the city, turning Villa Bellissima into a magical, winter wonderland.

Inside the grand living room, a massive pine tree stood near the stone fireplace, decorated with twinkling gold lights, antique glass ornaments, and handmade paper stars that Maya had spent all week crafting.

The room smelled of roasting chestnuts, cinnamon, and fresh pine needles.

Theo, now fourteen months old, was wobbling across the plush Persian rug on his sturdy little legs, letting out loud, giggling squeals as Maya chased him while wearing a pair of velvet reindeer antlers.

"Catch him, Maya!" I laughed from the sofa, where I was sitting wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, holding a mug of hot cocoa.

Signora Rosa walked into the room carrying a platter of fresh Italian Christmas pastries, smiling warmly at the children. "Il piccolo Theo is getting so fast, Signora Clara!"

"Too fast," I smiled, watching the little boy collapse into a heap of giggles on the rug beside Maya.

The heavy wooden doors of the living room opened, and Julian walked in.

He had just returned from a three-day trip to New York. He looked tired from the long flight, but the moment his eyes landed on us sitting by the fire, the tiredness melted away from his face, replaced by a deep, radiant warmth.

"Daddy!" Maya squealed, abandoning her reindeer game and sprinting across the room.

Julian dropped to one knee, catching Maya in a tight, swooping hug, lifting her high into the air as she giggled uncontrollably.

"Look at you!" Julian smiled, kissing her cheek before setting her down. "Did you save any pastries for me?"

"Theo ate three!" Maya reported proudly.

"I did not!" Julian teased, walking over to pick up his son, who immediately buried his small face into his father's neck, resting his hand against Julian's lapel in that familiar, comforting way he had done since he was a baby.

Julian walked over to the sofa, sitting down beside me. He set Theo down between us on the soft cushions and reached over to wrap his arm around my shoulders, pulling me close against his side.

I rested my head against his shoulder, closing my eyes, feeling the steady, strong rhythm of his heartbeat.

"How was New York?" I asked softly.

"Long," Julian replied, kissing the top of my head. "Boring. All I could think about was coming home to you."

He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small blue velvet box, and set it gently in my lap.

I looked at the box, my heart giving a soft, happy flutter.

"What is this?" I asked, looking up into his silver eyes.

"Open it," Julian murmured softly.

I opened the box.

Inside sat a breathtaking platinum ring holding a brilliant, clear diamond flanked by two smaller sapphires—representing Maya and Theo.

"Julian..." my breath caught in my throat.

Julian took the box from my hand, taking my right hand in his. His face was entirely serious, filled with a raw, honest vulnerability that few people in the world would ever be privileged to see.

"Clara," Julian said, his voice deep and trembling slightly with emotion. "One year ago, I was a broken man sitting in first class, holding a motherless child, drowning in grief and control. You walked through a curtain, handed me my son's life, and showed me what unconditional love looks like."

He looked into my eyes, his grip on my hand tightening gently.

"You gave me back my family. You healed my son. You gave me a reason to love again. I don't want a life without you, Clara. I want to spend every sunrise, every winter, every year holding your hand, protecting our children, and building a world together."

He slid the ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly.

"Will you marry me, Clara?" Julian whispered.

I looked at the ring shimmering in the firelight, then looked at Maya and Theo playing happily on the rug at our feet, and finally looked into the eyes of the man who had saved my life.

May you like

"Yes, Julian," I cried softly, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes! A thousand times, yes!"

Julian pulled me into a deep, passionate kiss, his arms wrapping tightly around me, as the snow fell softly against the windowpanes outside Villa Bellissima.
