Chapter 3 - The First Volley

By eight o'clock the following morning, the sun broke over the Tuscan hills, flooding the terrace of Villa Bellissima with brilliant, golden light.

I sat at an outdoor iron table, watching Maya happily eat blueberry pancakes under the watchful, grandmotherly eye of Signora Rosa. For the first time in three years, my shoulders weren't hunched toward my ears. I didn't have to monitor the sound of a garage door opening or worry about whether my daughter's laughter was too loud.

Julian walked out onto the terrace, wearing a dark suit, holding a steaming cup of black coffee in one hand and a thick leather folder in the other.

"Good morning," he said, pulling out a chair beside me.

"Good morning," I replied, looking at him nervously. "Did you... did you sleep at all?"

"I don't need much sleep," Julian said smoothly, opening the folder. "Especially when my legal team works through the night."

He slid a printout across the white tablecloth toward me. It was a formal legal motion filed in the Superior Court of King County, Washington.

My eyes scanned the header: MERCER V. MERCER – EMERGENCY MOTION FOR EX PARTE CUSTODY AND RESTRAINING ORDER.

My blood ran cold. "He filed it?"

"Two hours ago," Julian confirmed, taking a sip of his coffee. "Richard claimed in his affidavit that you suffered a severe psychotic break following the stress of leaving your nursing job, that you kidnapped Maya under the influence of unprescribed medication, and that you fled the country with stolen marital assets."

"Stolen assets?!" I gasped, my voice rising in outrage. "I took two hundred and seventy-four Euros! That was my own money from my old savings account before we got married!"

"It doesn't matter what the truth is to a man like Richard," Julian explained calmly. "He is using standard legal terrorism. He wants to manufacture a crisis, paint you as an unfit mother, and use international Hague Convention protocols to force Italian authorities to extradite you and Maya back to Seattle."

Panic surged through me like a wave of icy water. I reached out, grabbing Julian’s sleeve. "Julian, please! If they force me to go back, he’ll take Maya away from me! He has judges in his pocket in Seattle! His managing partner is the former state attorney general!"

Julian didn't pull away. He looked down at my hand on his sleeve, then reached over with his free hand and wrapped his fingers firmly around mine. His touch was warm, solid, and utterly grounding.

"Clara, look at me," Julian commanded softly.

I met his silver eyes.

"Richard Mercer is a big fish in a small pond in Seattle," Julian said, his voice flat with absolute certainty. "I own the pond. I own the banks that fund his law firm’s commercial mortgages. I own the media group that controls three major news networks in the Pacific Northwest. And as of forty-five minutes ago, my firm purchased forty-nine percent of the mezzanine debt of Mercer, Vance & Associates."

I blinked, trying to process his words. "You... you bought his law firm’s debt?"

"I bought their entire leverage portfolio," Julian corrected with a razor-thin smile that didn't reach his eyes. "If Richard takes one step onto a plane to Italy, if he files one more fraudulent motion against you, I execute a covenant default clause on his firm. His partners will strip his senior equity before he can finish his morning coffee."

I sat back in my chair, completely speechless. I had spent eleven months hiding tiny banknotes under the lining of my suitcase, planning an escape that felt fragile enough to break at any moment. And in less than twelve hours, Julian Vale had built an impenetrable wall of money and power around me.

"Why?" I whispered again, the question tearing at my throat. "Why go this far for a stranger?"

Before Julian could answer, Signora Rosa stepped out onto the terrace holding Theo. The baby was awake, his bright blue eyes looking around the sunlit patio. The moment Theo saw me, he let out a tiny, high-pitched squeal, waving his chubby fists in the air.

Julian looked at his son, then looked back at me. The harsh, terrifying billionaire vanished, replaced by a grieving father whose heart was slowly beating again.

"Because you reminded my son that he was loved when I didn't know how to reach him," Julian said softly. "And because nobody hurts a child under my protection. Ever."

At that exact moment, Daniel walked out onto the terrace, holding a satellite phone. His face was grim.

"Mr. Vale," Daniel said quietly. "Richard Mercer is on line one. He managed to track your private estate's administrative switchboard through our flight plan registration."

Julian didn't look surprised. He reached out, took the satellite phone from Daniel, and clicked speakerphone.

A harsh, furious voice filled the quiet terrace—a voice that had haunted my nightmares for eleven months.

"Julian Vale?!" Richard shouted through the speaker, his tone dripping with arrogant rage. "I know my wife is at your estate! You have thirty minutes to put Clara and my daughter in a car to the embassy, or I will leak to every national outlet that you are holding an American mother and child hostage in Italy!"

May you like

Julian took a slow sip of his black coffee, completely unbothered.

"Mr. Mercer," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register so dangerously low it made the air on the terrace feel cold. "My name is Julian Vale. And you have five seconds to change your tone before I ruin your life."
