Chapter 1 - The Heavy Boots

The front door didn't open; it exploded inward as the deadbolts sheared off the frame under a single, violent kick.

Raul stood up so fast his chair flipped backward, slamming against the polished hardwood. Helena’s smug smile vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated shock as five men in tactical black gear swept into the foyer, their movements synchronized, silent, and deadly precise. Behind them, stepping through the splintered threshold with absolute, terrifying calm, came a man in a tailor-made charcoal suit.

It was my elder brother, Gabriel Vance.

Ten years ago, the media had dubbed him the "Ghost of Wall Street"—a billionaire industrialist who operated with cold, ruthless intelligence, completely dismantling corrupted corporate empires and criminal networks alike. Victor’s family had spent years bragging about their local influence, but they lived in mortal fear of Gabriel, a man who moved in circles so high that local police chiefs and federal judges bowed to his word.

Gabriel didn't look at Victor, nor at Raul or Helena. His dark, sharp eyes swept across the room until they landed on me—bleeding on the kitchen tile, my arms still fiercely locked around my six-month pregnant belly.

In a fraction of a second, the icy composure on my brother’s face shattered into pure, apocalyptic fury.

"Tactical team, secure the perimeter," Gabriel ordered, his voice echoing through the silent house like a thunderclap. "No one leaves this room alive if they move a single inch."

"Who the hell do you think you are?!" Victor screamed, trying to muster courage, raising his father’s heavy wooden cane. "This is my house! You just broke into—"

Gabriel crossed the kitchen floor in three massive strides. Before Victor could even swing the cane, Gabriel’s left hand shot out like a steel trap, gripping Victor by the throat and slamming his head violently into the granite kitchen island.

Nora shrieked, dropping her phone. The device bounced on the floor, its camera still recording.

"Touch her again," Gabriel whispered, his fingers crushing Victor’s windpipe until the younger man’s eyes bulged with terror, "and I will tear your limbs off one by one."

Gabriel tossed Victor aside like a bag of trash. Victor collapsed onto his knees, gasping and coughing violently.

Gabriel dropped to his knees beside me, his large, calloused hands trembling gently as he touched my bruised face. "Clara... Clara, look at me. I’m here. I’m here, little sister."

"The... the baby, Gabriel..." I choked out, blood leaking from my split lip onto his bespoke sleeve. "Please... save my baby..."

"Medics!" Gabriel roared over his shoulder, his voice breaking with rare emotion. "Get the surgical unit in here now!"
