Chapter 8 - The Final Reckoning

The defense table erupted into complete chaos. Carmen stood up, screaming at her lawyer, while Javier put his head in his hands and began to weep aloud.
Judge Evans slammed her gavel down three times, her voice ringing across the courtroom. "Order in the court! Silence or I will have the gallery cleared!"
Once quiet was restored, the judge looked down at Carmen Robles with utter disdain.
"In light of the federal superseding indictment," Judge Evans ruled, "bail for all defendants is hereby revoked immediately. They will be remanded into federal custody without bond pending trial."
Two federal marshals stepped up to Carmen, pulling her arms behind her back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.
As she was being led toward the side door reserved for prisoners, Carmen’s eyes met Alexander’s.
Alexander didn't look at her with hatred or triumph. His expression was completely neutral, the look of a professional soldier watching a dangerous obstacle being permanently cleared from a path.
Carmen looked at Sofia, her voice trembling with desperate, ugly rage. "You ruined my family! You little bitch, you ruined everything we spent our lives building!"
Sofia didn't shrink back. She stood up from the prosecution table, looked Carmen straight in the eyes, and spoke in a clear, resonant voice that reached every corner of the silent courtroom.
"You built your family on fear, Carmen," Sofia said coldly. "My father built mine on love. That’s why yours collapsed... and mine is still standing."
The gallery burst into hushed whispers as Carmen was dragged through the steel door, screaming hysterically until the heavy lock clicked shut behind her.
Javier was handcuffed next. As he passed Sofia, he stopped, his eyes red and swollen, whispering, "Sofia... please... I loved you..."

Sofia simply turned her back on him, walking toward her father and taking his arm.
"Let’s go home, Dad," she whispered.
