Chapter 2 - The Command Center

The property in Northern Virginia didn't look like a military installation from the outside. It appeared to be a secluded stone farmhouse set back behind a thick line of pine trees, surrounded by a simple wooden fence. But as Alexander drove his unmarked black SUV through the gate, I noticed the subtle camera domes hidden in the trees and the heavy steel reinforcement on the door frames.

Inside, the house was immaculate, functional, and intensely technological. The basement had been converted into a tactical command room lined with monitors, secure communication servers, and framed photographs of Alexander’s old unit—the 75th Ranger Regiment.

Alexander brought Sofia a mug of warm broth, watched her drink it, and ensured she was tucked into a high-security bedroom on the upper floor with an automated lock system. Once she was asleep, exhausted from trauma and pain, he gestured for me to follow him down into the basement.

On the main wall of monitors, video streams were already populating.

"My former communications officer, Marcus, pulled the Grand Plaza footage ten minutes ago," Alexander said, pointing to a grid of four screens.

I caught my breath. There was the hallway outside Suite 501. The timestamp read 01:14 AM.

On the screen, Javier Robles walked out of the suite, dressed in his tailored tuxedo. He looked around the hallway, checked his gold watch, and nodded to three women waiting near the elevator—Carmen Robles and two of her sisters. Javier patted his mother on the shoulder, said something that made her laugh, and stepped down the hall toward the fire stairs.

"Look at his face," Alexander whispered, his hand gripping the edge of the desk so tightly his knuckles turned white. "No hesitation. No remorse. He handed his bride over to six wolves and stood guard at the exit."

Five minutes later on the video, the six women entered the suite. Fifty minutes passed before the door opened again. They dragged Sofia—her dress already torn, her hair disheveled—into the service elevator bay.

"They threw her out through the loading dock like trash," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a register that chilled me to the bone. "They thought she would run home, hide in shame, and sign the deed tomorrow to make the nightmare stop."

"What are we going to do, Alex?" I asked, calling him by his old nickname for the first time in ten years. "If we go to the police, Javier’s uncle will stall the investigation. They’ll claim it was a domestic dispute, or that she fell, or that she’s unstable."

Alexander pulled a thick dossier from a secure cabinet beneath the desk. "We aren't going to the police. Not yet. First, we strip them of everything they think protects them."

He opened the file, revealing financial charts, asset trees, and corporate organizational diagrams centered around the Robles family name.

"You thought Carmen wanted that condo just because it’s worth two million dollars?" Alexander looked at me, a bitter smile touching his lips. "Look at the financial network, Ellen. The Robles family is broke. Their commercial real estate empire went under six months ago. They’re running a shell game with offshore loans."
