Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

That night, back at the safe house, the atmosphere was thick with quiet emotion.

Sofia was sitting up in bed, her face less swollen thanks to the medication, staring out the window at the dark Virginia woods. I sat in a chair beside her, peeling an apple, while Alexander stood near the fireplace, staring into the flames.

"Dad?" Sofia spoke softly, breaking the long silence.

Alexander immediately turned around, his intense gaze softening completely. "Yes, baby girl?"

"Why did you leave us?" she asked, her voice small and fragile. "Ten years ago... you just packed your bag and signed the divorce papers. Mom never told me why, and you never called."

I dropped the knife into my lap, my heart slamming against my ribs. I looked at Alexander, waiting for him to tell the lie we had agreed on a decade ago—that we simply grew apart, that his service made marriage impossible.

Instead, Alexander walked over and sat on the edge of her mattress. He looked at me first, an apologetic glance, then turned back to our daughter.

"When I came back from my last deployment in Afghanistan," Alexander said slowly, every word heavy with ancient pain, "I brought back things that made me dangerous to be around. Nightmares, rage, and a group of men from my past who wanted revenge for a covert operation that went wrong in Kabul."

Sofia’s eyes widened. "What?"

"Two months before I left," I chimed in, taking Sofia’s hand, "someone planted a explosive package under our family car in our old driveway. Your father intercepted it before anyone got hurt. But we realized that as long as he was near us, you were a target for people far worse than Carmen Robles."

Alexander nodded slowly. "I made a deal with my division commander. I stayed off the grid, worked high-level intelligence contracts from the shadows, and neutralized every threat attached to my name over the last ten years. I divorced your mother to break the legal link between us so no foreign court or enemy could ever trace my financial assets back to you."

Tears welled in Sofia’s eyes as she realized the truth. "The condo... the two-million-dollar condo you gave me..."

"Was bought with clean funds from my private trust," Alexander said gently. "It was supposed to be your sanctuary. A place where you would be safe forever. I failed you by letting you walk into that marriage without vetting Javier’s family first."

May you like

"You didn't fail me, Dad," Sofia sobbed, leaning forward and burying her face into her father’s chest. "You came back."

Alexander wrapped his arms around her, holding her tightly against his shoulder, his eyes closing as ten years of grief and distance vanished into the quiet night.
