Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Richard’s jaw dropped. The gun in his hand trembled so violently it nearly slipped from his fingers. His mind struggled to process the scene before him, torn between raw horror and utter disbelief.

"No..." he stammered, shaking his head frantically. "No! This is impossible! You plummeted thousands of feet! I watched you fall into the Pacific!"

"You watched Clara Vance fall," I said calmly, walking slowly down the architectural staircase, my hand resting gracefully on the stainless steel handrail. "A professional stunt diver equipped with a low-profile parachute and a face mask designed by Hollywood’s top technicians. Did you really think I would trust my life—and the life of my child—to a man who spent more time looking at my bank accounts than at my ultrasounds?"

"You... you set me up!" Richard yelled, his shock turning into a vein-popping rage. "You planned this whole thing!"

"You set yourself up, Richard," I replied, reaching the bottom of the stairs and stopping twenty feet away from him. "I gave you every opportunity to be a husband. I gave you love, access, power, and respect. But you were greedy. You couldn't bear being the man behind the Hayes fortune. You wanted to own it."

Richard’s face twisted into an ugly, maniacal sneer. The shock was burning away, replaced by the cornered desperation of a predator who realized he had been outsmarted.

"It doesn't matter," Richard hissed, raising the gun and aiming it directly at my chest. "It doesn't matter how smart you think you are, Amelia. We are alone in this house. There are no cameras here that can save you now. I'll shoot you right here, throw your body off these cliffs myself, and burn this damn house to the ground!"

I didn't flinch. I didn't step back. I simply looked at him with an expression of deep, cold pity.

"You always were terrible at checking the perimeter, Richard," I said softly.

Before Richard could pull the trigger, the massive glass walls surrounding the living room exploded inward in a shower of reinforced safety glass.

Heavy tactical flashbangs detonated with a blinding flash and a deafening roar. The shockwave threw Richard off balance, sending him crashing to the polished concrete floor, his gun skidding across the room.

"SWAT! SFPD! DON'T MOVE!"

Armed tactical officers clad in black armor flooded through the broken windows and doors, their rifle laser sights painting red dots across Richard’s chest and head.

Vance stepped through the doorway, flanked by state prosecutors and police detectives, holding a tablet that was actively recording the entire exchange.

"Richard Hayes," a detective announced over a megaphone, "you are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, corporate fraud, and grand larceny. Drop to your knees and place your hands behind your head!"
