Chapter 1 - The Descent and the Decoy

The rush of the wind was deafening, a roaring tempest that threatened to rip the air straight from my lungs. Below me, the Pacific Ocean spread out like a cold, glittering sheet of blue glass. Thousands of feet above, the helicopter’s rotor blades sliced through the atmosphere, a receding black speck carrying the man who had just tried to end my life. Richard believed he had executed the perfect crime. He believed he was watching the mother of his unborn child plunge to a watery grave, taking her vast inheritance with him into the abyss.
He was wrong.
What Richard didn't know—what he couldn't possibly have known—was that the woman he had shoved out of that open doorway was not Amelia Hayes.
Three months prior, when Richard’s questions about my estate planning turned from casually curious to obsessively calculated, I hired Vance Vance, a former intelligence operative running a private security firm in Los Angeles. Vance had helped me construct a ghost safety net. We knew Richard’s ego would demand a dramatic, untraceable method of disposal. When Richard booked the private helicopter tour through a shell company under the guise of an anniversary surprise, Vance’s team went to work.
The woman who boarded that helicopter with Richard was Clara Vance, an expert stunt performer and tactical diver wearing an ultralight, custom-molded silicone mask that mirrored my face to the smallest pore. Beneath her loose, maternity-style dress was a reinforced body harness equipped with a low-profile, rapid-deployment tactical parachute designed for low-altitude jumps.
As Clara plummeted toward the water, she pulled the concealed rip cord. The dark grey canopy bloomed against the sky, arresting her fall just above the tree line of the coastal cliffs, far out of Richard’s line of vision as he sped away toward the horizon.
Meanwhile, miles away in a high-security penthouse in downtown San Francisco, I sat in front of a bank of monitors, my hand resting gently on my five-month pregnant belly. My heart hammered against my ribs, not from fear, but from the icy surge of adrenaline. On the screens before me, telemetry data, GPS tracking, and hidden audio feeds from Clara’s body camera were recording every single second of Richard’s betrayal.
"He did it, Amelia," Vance said softly, standing behind my chair. "The jump is complete. Clara is safe in the recovery boat. We have the audio of him telling her to move closer to the door, followed by the sound of the physical struggle and the shove."
I stared at the screen where Richard’s helicopter was now heading back toward the private airport in Monterey. Through the cockpit microphone we had secretly tapped, we heard Richard exhaling a long, shuddering breath. Then, he began to practice his grief.
"Help... oh God, Mayday, Mayday!" Richard’s voice cracked over the radio frequency, his tone shifting into frantic, artificial despair. "My wife... she slipped! She was taking a photo and lost her footing! Send help!"

I closed my eyes, a cold smile touching my lips. Richard had no idea that the real game hadn't even begun. He thought he was about to inherit Hayes Global Technologies, a empire worth over twelve billion dollars. He thought he was going home to mourn a tragic accident. Instead, he had just walked directly into a trap that would dismantle his life piece by piece.
"Call the team," I told Vance, my voice steady, stripped of all vulnerability. "It’s time to activate Phase Two. Richard wants to be a grieving billionaire widow? Let’s give him the performance of his life."
