Chapter 9 - The Healing Tide

Two weeks later.

The threat had been eradicated. The Syndicate was entirely under Damien’s absolute control, purified of treason through a swift, terrifying purge that left the Boston underworld stunned into absolute silence. No one dared lift a finger against the Cross empire.

At the Beacon Hill brownstone, the heavy shadow of death had finally begun to lift.

Erin sat on the sunlit terrace overlooking the garden. The weather had turned mild, a clear spring breeze carrying the scent of blooming jasmine. Her skin had recovered its healthy warmth, her cheeks were full again, and her hair was thick and glossy. The chelation therapy had been completely successful—Dr. Vance had confirmed that morning that the toxins were entirely out of her system, and the baby was growing strong, perfectly healthy.

She wore a simple white sundress that showed her clearly defined, four-and-a-half-month baby bump.

Damien walked out onto the terrace, wearing a plain gray shirt without his usual dark tailored jacket. He carried two glasses of fresh iced juice, setting one down on the small iron table beside her.

He pulled up a chair and sat down, his eyes soft as he looked at her.

"Dr. Vance says you can start light walks outside starting tomorrow," Damien said, his voice dropping the harsh, cold edge it usually carried. "If you want to."

Erin smiled, taking a sip of the juice. "I’d like that. I’ve been staring at these walls for weeks."

She looked at him, studying the subtle changes in his face. The lines of tension around his eyes had softened. He looked less like a king guarding a warzone and more like a man who had finally found a place to rest.

"What happens to Atlantic Harbor Logistics now?" Erin asked gently. "Now that Thorne and Reyes are gone?"

"I’m restructuring," Damien said, looking out over the garden. "Selling off the high-risk shipping routes. Shifting the operations into legitimate cargo logistics. I’m pulling the Syndicate out of the dirty work."

Erin raised an eyebrow, surprised. "You're walking away from the street operations? That’s where half your revenue comes from."

"It’s also where all the bullets come from," Damien turned to look at her, his dark eyes locking onto hers with deep sincerity. "I spent fifteen years building a fortress because I thought power was the only thing that could keep me safe. But power attracts men like Thorne and Reyes. I don't want my child growing up in the dark, Erin."

Erin felt a lump form in her throat. She reached across the table, wrapping her hand around his. "Damien..."

"I was going to fire you that night," Damien murmured, his thumb rubbing the back of her hand. "Because I thought you were weak. I thought you were letting down the guard. I was a fool."

May you like

"You were protecting your empire," she said softly.

"No," Damien said, rising from his chair and kneeling beside her seat, his hand moving down to cover her belly, feeling the faint, gentle kick from within. "You and this baby... you are my empire now."
