Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

Back at the Beacon Hill brownstone, the atmosphere had shifted. The initial shock of the toxicity was wearing off as Erin’s treatment began to show results. Her cheeks were regaining a hint of color, though the physical toll of the last four months remained visible.

Damien entered the bedroom late that night. The house was quiet, save for the hum of the monitoring equipment. He found Erin sitting up in bed, looking through a stack of physical papers he had brought her from her desk—documents unrelated to the case, meant to keep her mind active.

He sat on the edge of the mattress. The distance between them felt different now—less like boss and employee, more like two survivors trapped in the same storm.

"Clara was the delivery vector," Damien said quietly.

Erin lowered her papers, her eyes dark with sadness. "Clara? She’s just a kid. Her brother has leukemia..."

"Someone used her," Damien said. "They offered her money to put thallium in your tea. She thought it was just something to make you sick enough to get fired."

Erin closed her eyes, a single tear escaping down her cheek. "I thought I was losing my mind, Damien. I thought... I thought the stress was killing me. Every morning I woke up feeling like my bones were made of lead. And I was so terrified that if I told you, if I showed any weakness, you’d throw me out. And then I’d have nothing... no way to protect the baby."

Damien reached out, his long fingers gently catching the tear on her cheek. "You should have trusted me."

"Trust you?" Erin laughed bitterly, looking at him. "Damien, you’re a crime lord. You liquidate enemies. You spent three years making sure I knew that weakness in your organization was punished by death. How was I supposed to know how you’d react to a baby?"

Damien looked away, his jaw tightening. "You’re right," he admitted softly, the confession costing him dearly. "I built an environment where you couldn't feel safe. That’s my failure."

He looked back at her, his dark eyes fierce. "But you are carrying my blood, Erin. And whatever rules I applied to the rest of the world... they don't apply to you. Not anymore."

May you like

Erin looked at his hand, still hovering near her face. Hesitantly, she lifted her own hand and placed it over his, pressing his palm against her cheek. "What happens now?"

"Now," Damien said, "we find out who gave Clara the poison. And I burn their world to ash."
