Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Ghost

The days following the boardroom arrests were a whirlwind of media frenzy, legal proceedings, and corporate restructuring. Cole Dynamics made headlines across the globe, not for its record-breaking stock prices, but for the shocking exposure of the deep-state criminal ring that had operated beneath its surface. The stock plummeted initially, but as I stepped back into full control, stripping away every single corrupt executive and restructuring the company into a transparent, ethics-driven organization, public trust slowly began to rebuild.

Yet, despite the public victory, the personal wounds remained wide open.

Two weeks after the arrests, the storm had finally cleared, leaving behind a crisp, sunny autumn afternoon in Connecticut. The east wing of my house, once a dark graveyard of secrets, was wide open, sunshine streaming through the newly replaced windows. Contractors were busy converting the old, dusty rooms into bright, welcoming spaces.

I stood in Eleanor’s former study, watching Clara as she sat on the window sill, a hot mug of tea cradled in her hands. She looked healthier now, the dark circles under her eyes fading, though the trauma of the past six years still lingered in her posture. Down in the garden, Maria was watching little Sophia run around in a bright pink sweater, chasing leaves as they blew across the lawn.

"I still can't believe it's over," Clara said softly, looking out at the gardens. "For six years, I ran. I thought if I stopped moving, Harrison's people would find me and erase me the same way they erased Eleanor."

I walked over, placing a gentle hand on my sister's shoulder. "You don't have to run anymore, Clara. You're home. And I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry I let my anger over Dad's estate blind me for so long. If I had stayed in touch with you, maybe Eleanor wouldn't have had to fight them alone."

Clara placed her hand over mine, squeezing tightly. "We were both manipulated, Ethan. Harrison was the executor of Dad's estate back then, remember? He intentionally drove a wedge between us so we wouldn't pool our shares together and question his moves at Cole Dynamics. He wanted us divided."

A cold realization hit me. The manipulation ran far deeper than I had ever imagined. Harrison hadn't just tried to destroy my present; he had orchestrated the destruction of my family from the very beginning.

"There's something else, Ethan," Clara continued, setting her tea mug down on the sill. She pulled a small, silver key from her pocket—the duplicate key Eleanor had given her years ago. "When Eleanor realized they were watching her, she hid a secondary physical archive. Not here in the house, but somewhere only you and she knew about."

I frowned, searching my memories of Eleanor. "We didn't have any secret properties. Just this house and the beach cottage in Rhode Island."

"Think, Ethan," Clara urged. "Where did you go when you two wanted to get away from the entire world? Where did you go before Cole Dynamics even existed?"

A sudden memory flashed in my mind: a small, rustic wooden cabin nestled deep in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. We had bought it with our pocket money during our second year of college. It wasn't registered under Cole Dynamics, nor was it listed in our primary asset portfolio. It was our sanctuary—a place without electricity or internet, where Eleanor used to sit on the porch and write her early journalistic pieces on an old mechanical typewriter.

"The Berkshire cabin," I whispered.

"She told me that if anything ever happened to her, and if the main files were ever compromised, the real truth—the master ledger—was hidden under the floorboards beneath the fireplace," Clara said, her eyes dead serious. "The file we gave the FBI was enough to put Vance and Harrison away for murder and corporate fraud. But Eleanor told me the master ledger contains the names of the international buyers—the politicians, the foreign intelligence officers, the billionaires who bought the weapons and data from Cole Dynamics."

My stomach turned. "If that master ledger exists, Vance and Harrison were just the middle managers. The real monsters are still out there."

"And they know Vance and Harrison failed," Clara added, her voice dropping. "Which means as long as that ledger remains hidden, we are all still targets."

Before I could answer, my phone rang on the desk. It was an encrypted call from Inspector Sarah Miller, the lead FBI agent handling the case.

I answered, placing it on speaker. "Agent Miller."

"Ethan," Miller’s voice sounded tight, laced with urgent concern. "We have a major problem."

"What happened?"

"Richard Vance was just found dead in his holding cell at the federal correctional facility. Poisoned during lunch hour. And Arthur Harrison... he was being transferred to the federal courthouse twenty minutes ago when his transport convoy was ambushed on the highway."

My blood went cold. "Did he escape?"

"He didn't just escape, Ethan. He was taken by a highly trained tactical squad using military-grade explosives. They wiped out the police escort in under ninety seconds. Harrison is loose, and according to our intelligence, a black-market contract has just been placed on you, your sister, and anyone connected to Eleanor's research."

I looked out the window at Maria and little Sophia playing peacefully in the autumn sun. The battle wasn't over. It was just escalating.

"Miller," I said, my voice hardening into steel. "I know where the master ledger is."

"Where?"

"I'm not telling you over an open line," I replied. "Send a tactical team to my estate to protect my staff and my sister. I'm going to get the ledger myself."

"Ethan, no! It's too dangerous—"

May you like

I disconnected the call. I turned to Clara, who was watching me with wide, terrified eyes.

"Stay here with the federal agents," I commanded, grabbing my coat. "I'm going to the Berkshires. It's time to end this once and for all."
