Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Siege

The rain was relentless, pouring down in heavy sheets as my heavy armored SUV tore through the streets of downtown Stamford, cutting through the dusk traffic like an iron bullet. My jaw throbbed where the operative had hit me, and my ribs burned with every breath, but I barely felt the physical pain. My focus was razor-sharp, locked entirely on the leather-bound file sitting on the passenger seat beside me.

During the forty-minute drive, I had opened Eleanor’s file. What I found inside made my blood boil with righteous fury. It wasn't just a list of illegal shipments; it was a meticulously documented conspiracy going back five years.

My chief operating officer, Richard Vance, and my primary investor, Arthur Harrison, had created a shadow division within Cole Dynamics. They had been using our high-tech logistics network to traffic illegal weapons, stolen biometric data, and untraceable funds across international borders. When Eleanor discovered the anomaly during her investigative research, she confronted Vance directly, thinking he was an innocent party. Days later, she was dead.

And now, Clara had uncovered the final piece: the bank accounts proving Vance and Harrison had personally ordered the hit on Eleanor and paid off the local coroner to falsify the autopsy report.

I pulled into the underground garage of the Cole Dynamics skyscraper at 4:45 PM. The massive glass-and-steel building stood sixty stories high, a symbol of modern innovation that was now tarnished by blood and greed.

I skipped the main lobby, using my private keycard to take the executive express elevator directly to the top floor. The elevator hummed smoothly as it ascended, the floor numbers ticking up rapidly. I checked the suppressed firearm tucked neatly inside my tailored jacket, making sure my suit was buttoned to hide the bloodstains on my shirt.

When the elevator doors slid open on the 60th floor, the floor was eerily quiet. The reception desk was empty, the late-afternoon staff clearly sent home early under the guise of an executive maintenance shutdown.

I walked down the wide marble hallway toward the grand boardroom. Through the frosted glass doors, I could hear the muffled, confident voice of Richard Vance addressing the members of the board.

"...and so, given Ethan's sudden emotional instability and his complete abandonment of today's crucial vote regarding the Taiwan expansion, I move that we declare him unfit to execute his duties as CEO immediately," Vance was saying, his tone dripping with fake sympathy. "We must protect the company's shareholders. Arthur Harrison has agreed to step in as interim Chairman."

"Seconded," Arthur Harrison’s deep, booming voice called out from the head of the table. "All those in favor of removing Ethan Cole—"

I didn't bother knocking. I slammed my palm against the heavy double doors, pushing them open with enough force that they slammed against the interior walls like thunder.

The chatter stopped instantly. A dozen heads snapped toward the doorway in total shock.

Richard Vance sat at the middle of the long glass table, an open laptop before him, holding a pen in mid-air. Arthur Harrison sat at the head, his expensive suit tailored to perfection, his silver hair immaculate.

"Ethan?" Vance gasped, his face draining of color as he took in my disheveled appearance—the cut over my eye, the rain-soaked hair, the cold, murderous look in my eyes. "What... what is the meaning of this? You can't just interrupt an executive session!"

"The session is over, Richard," I said, my voice echoing off the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overseeing the stormy city skyline. I walked slowly toward the table, every step deliberate. "In fact, your entire career is over."

Arthur Harrison narrowed his eyes, slamming his fist onto the table. "You've lost your mind, Ethan! Look at you! You look like a madman who just stepped out of a street fight! Security!"

"Security isn't coming, Arthur," I said coldly, reaching into my jacket. Several board members gasped, flinching back in fear, expecting a weapon. Instead, I pulled out the leather folder and slammed it down onto the middle of the glass table with a deafening thud.

"What is that?" Vance stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward the exit.

"That," I said, leaning over the table, glaring directly into Vance's trembling eyes, "is the complete financial trail of the shadow division you and Harrison created. It contains the shipping manifests from Taiwan, the offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands, and the explicit text exchanges between you and the hitmen you hired to cut the brake lines on my wife's car three years ago."

Gasps erupted around the table. Board members began whispering frantically, looking back and forth between me and the two men at the head of the table.

"This is absurd!" Harrison shouted, his voice cracking slightly. "He's making wild accusations! He's grieving, hallucinating—"

"I have the digital backup already sent to the FBI, the Department of Justice, and every major news outlet in the country," I interrupted, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "And three minutes ago, Clara made it safely to the state police headquarters. The men you sent to my house to murder my family are currently unconscious in my east wing, waiting for the police to pick them up."

Vance’s composure shattered completely. He looked at Harrison, his breathing heavy, panicking. "You said your team handled it! You said he was locked down at the house!"

"Shut up, you fool!" Harrison roared, glaring at Vance with pure venom.

"So you admit it," I said, a dark, victorious smile spreading across my face.

Before Harrison could reply, the heavy doors behind me burst open again. This time, it wasn't my security team. A dozen armed federal agents flooded into the boardroom, led by a sharp-looking woman in an FBI jacket holding a federal warrant.

"Nobody move!" the lead agent commanded, her voice cutting through the panic. "Arthur Harrison, Richard Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and treasonous smuggling operations. Hands where we can see them!"

May you like

As the agents moved in, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Vance and Harrison, Harrison looked up at me, his eyes burning with hatred. "You think this ends here, Cole? You think you've won?"

I leaned down close to his ear as the agent pulled him out of his leather chair. "Eleanor brought down empires with a pen, Arthur. I brought down yours with her legacy. Enjoy the rest of your life in a federal cage."
