Chapter 3 - The Breach

The footfalls stopped just outside the heavy oak door of the study. Rain continued to lash against the glass behind me, providing a dark, rhythmic backdrop to the tension thick enough to cut with a blade.

The door swung open slowly. Two men stepped into the room. They weren't dressed like typical street thugs; they wore tailored dark suits with tactical earpieces, moving with the quiet, calculated precision of high-level private military operatives. The man in front was tall, with a clean-shaven head and a prominent scar running down his left jawline. In his gloved right hand, he held a suppressed pistol pointed casually at the floor.

"Mr. Cole," the scarred man said, his voice smooth, completely devoid of emotion. "We didn't expect you to leave your board call so abruptly. You're usually far more disciplined."

"You're in my house," I replied, keeping my voice dead even, forcing my heart rate down. "And you just threatened my staff. Give me one good reason why you shouldn't leave this estate in a body bag."

The man allowed a cold, hollow smile to touch his lips. "Because you're an intelligent businessman, Ethan. You understand leverage. We aren't here for you. We are here for your sister, Clara, and the property she stole from our mutual acquaintances."

"Clara isn't here," I lied smoothly, shifting my body slightly to cover the hidden panel behind me. "I haven't seen my sister in six years. If she breached my security, she's already gone."

"Don't insult my intelligence," the man sneered, raising the suppressed pistol until the sight was aligned directly with my chest. "We tracked her vehicle to your gates. The jammer in our van is currently disabling your internal security grid, your silent alarms, and your communication lines. You are completely isolated. Hand over the leather folder Clara brought with her, and we might leave you alive to run your company."

"And who sent you?" I asked, taking a subtle step to the left, angling toward Eleanor’s heavy mahogany desk. "Was it Vance? Or Harrison?"

Those were the two names at the top of my board of directors—men who had pushed hardest for the Taiwanese manufacturing expansion over my explicit objections.

"Names are irrelevant to dead men," the scar-faced operative replied. He nodded to his partner. "Search the room. Clear the closets."

The second man stepped forward, reaching into his jacket for his weapon. That was the moment I acted.

I grabbed the heavy bronze desk lamp beside me and hurled it with all my strength at the armed leader. The heavy metal base slammed into his chest, knocking him backward and causing his weapon to discharge into the floorboards with a soft thwack. Before the second operative could react, I lunged forward, tackling him low at the waist. We crashed into the filing cabinet, sending stacks of old papers showering down around us.

I was thirty-four, fit, and driven by pure adrenaline, but these men were trained killers. The second operative recovered quickly, driving an elbow sharply into my ribs. Pain exploded across my side, knocking the wind out of me. He threw me off him, pinning me against the wall and drawing a combat knife from his belt.

"Bad choice, CEO," he growled, raising the blade.

Suddenly, a loud metallic crack echoed through the room. The operative gasped, his eyes widening in shock as his grip loosened. He collapsed sideways onto the floor, revealing Maria standing behind him, clutching a heavy iron fireplace poker with both hands, her body shaking violently.

"Maria!" I gasped, clutching my aching side as I stood up. "I told Clara to get you and Sophia to the safe room!"

"Sophia is safe inside, Mr. Ethan," Maria panted, tears running down her cheeks as she dropped the bloody poker. "Clara is with her. But I couldn't leave you. You've been like a son to me since Mrs. Eleanor..."

"Look out!" I yelled.

The scarred leader was already pushing himself off the floor, raising his pistol toward Maria. I threw myself across the room, slamming into his shoulder just as he fired. The shot went wild, shattering the tall glass window behind us. Rain and cold wind instantly whipped into the room.

We wrestled furiously on the slippery floor, struggling for control of the weapon. I slammed his wrist against the hard oak floor once, twice, until the gun slipped from his fingers and slid across the room, disappearing beneath a covered armchair. The operative swung a heavy fist, clipping my jaw and sending black spots swimming across my vision.

Through the haze, I grabbed the heavy iron poker Maria had dropped, swinging it upward with everything I had left. The solid iron struck the side of his knee with a sickening crunch. The man let out a guttural scream, collapsing back onto the floor, holding his shattered leg.

Out of breath, bruised, and bleeding from a cut above my eye, I retrieved his dropped weapon and aimed it squarely at his chest.

"Now," I panted, wiping blood from my eyes. "You're going to tell me exactly who ordered you to kill my wife, or you won't leave this wing alive."

The scar-faced man spat blood onto the rug, grinning demonically despite the excruciating pain in his leg. "You think you've won, Cole? Look out the window. That was just the cleanup crew. The real play is happening at your headquarters right now. By five o'clock, your board is holding an emergency vote to strip you of your CEO position using your absence as proof of mental instability. You're already ruined."

My blood ran cold. The board meeting I had walked away from—it was a trap designed to draw me away while they took control of the company and eliminated Clara.

I turned to Maria, my voice firm and resolute. "Maria, take my keys. Go down the back stairs, get Clara and Sophia, and get into the armored SUV in the lower garage. The manual override key is under the driver's seat—it doesn't rely on electronic signals. Drive straight to the state police headquarters in Hartford."

"What about you, Mr. Ethan?" she cried, her hands trembling as she took the keys.

I picked up the leather folder Clara had left on the floor, holding it tightly under my arm. "I'm going to the board meeting. It's time to show Cole Dynamics who really owns the empire."
