Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Light

Six months later.
Spring had arrived in Phoenix, coating the desert landscape in vibrant golden blossoms and bright green cacti.
I stood in the sunlit backyard of a beautiful new home in Paradise Valley—a home purchased entirely through my new position as Executive Director of the Vance Family Foundation for Child Protection, an organization Marcus and I had created using the liquidated corporate assets of the old Vance Capital.
In the yard, nine-month-old Lucas was crawling across the soft grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy we had adopted three weeks ago. Emma was sitting on a wooden picnic table, drawing a picture of our new house with bright colored pencils.
Marcus walked out onto the patio, carrying a tray of fresh lemonade.
"How are the quarterly reports looking, Director?" Marcus joked, handing me a glass.
"The foundation just funded twenty new emergency housing units for mothers escaping domestic abuse in Maricopa County," I smiled, taking a sip. "And our legal defense team represents forty mothers who were facing fraudulent custody claims."
"You've built something incredible out of the ruins, Maya," Marcus said warmly, looking out at the kids.
"We built it together, Marcus," I replied.
My father walked out from the kitchen, holding a large mail envelope. "Maya, this just came from the family court clerk."
I opened the envelope. Inside was a thick, gold-embossed legal document bearing the official seal of the State of Arizona.
It was the final, non-appealable Decree of Sole Custody and Name Change.
Ryan's legal surname was officially removed from my children's records. From this day forward, Emma and Lucas would bear my maiden name—Holland. They were free. Free from the shadow of the Vance empire, free from the paranoia, and free to grow up in a home filled with unconditional love.
Emma ran over from the picnic table, grabbing the paper from my hands with a grin. "Is it official, Mommy?"
May you like
"It's official, baby," I kissed her forehead. "You are Emma Holland now."
Emma beamed, hugging me tightly around the waist. "I love our new name, Mommy."
