Chapter 7 - The Betrayal

The courtroom was in complete chaos. Bailiffs rushed to separate Ryan and Brenda as they shouted at each other across the defense table.
"He wants to change his plea!" Ryan’s public defender shouted over the noise, addressing the judge. "Your Honor, my client wishes to enter a guilty plea and testify against Brenda Vance in exchange for a plea agreement!"
Brenda’s eyes turned wide with shock. "Ryan! Don't you dare!"
"I'm doing it!" Ryan screamed, tears streaming down his face as guards held him back. "She made me do it all, Your Honor! She threatened to take my trust! She brought the drugs to the house! She paid off the CPS informant!"
Judge Miller slammed his gavel down with thunderous force. "Silence! Clear the gallery! Court is adjourned until two o'clock!"
During the recess, Prosecutor Gomez met with me and Marcus in a private room.
"Ryan is offering a complete confession," Gomez explained, showing us the draft document. "He will plead guilty to felony child endangerment and conspiracy. In exchange, he agrees to a fifteen-year prison sentence and full, unreserved testimony against Brenda on the attempted murder and poisoning charges."
I looked at the document. "What about his parental rights?"
"Part of the plea deal," Gomez stated firmly, "is the absolute, permanent termination of all parental rights for Ryan Vance. He will never be allowed near Emma or Lucas again."
I took a deep, shuddering breath. For months, I had carried the weight of fear, betrayal, and exhaustion. Now, the final wall of their defense was crumbling.
"Sign it," I said.
At 2:00 PM, the court reconvened.
Ryan took the witness stand—this time not as a defendant, but as a witness for the State of Arizona against his own mother.
For three straight hours, Ryan laid out every horrific detail of Brenda’s plan. He produced text messages, bank transfer records, and voicemails where Brenda explicitly instructed him how to administer the drugs to my food, how to stage scene photos of an messy house to show social workers, and how to manipulate the family trust funds.
Brenda sat alone at the defense table. Her high-priced attorneys looked thoroughly defeated, unable to counter the overwhelming mountain of evidence coming directly from her own son.
When the cross-examination ended, Brenda looked at Ryan as he walked back toward the holding cell.

"You're no son of mine," Brenda whispered, her voice laced with venom.
Ryan paused, looking at her with cold, empty eyes. "And you were never a mother. You were just a warden."
