Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

One year later.

The sunset over the McDowell Mountains was painted in shades of deep purple, fiery orange, and soft pink.

We gathered on the patio of our home for Emma’s eighth birthday party. My dad was flipping burgers on the grill, Marcus was playing catch with Lucas—who was now walking steadily on his sturdy little legs—and Emma was surrounded by her school friends, laughing as she blew out the candles on her massive chocolate cake.

I stood near the edge of the patio, leaning against the wooden railing, holding a glass of iced tea, watching my family thrive.

My phone rang softly in my pocket. It was a notification from the state prison system registry—a routine automated update I had set up months ago.

I opened the message.

Inmate Update: Brenda Vance (Inmate #309821) transfer request to low-security facility DENIED. Inmate Ryan Vance (Inmate #309822) parole application DENIED.

I closed the phone screen and slid it back into my pocket.

Their names no longer held any power over me. They were ghosts locked away in concrete walls, while my family was out here in the warm sun, living a life built on truth, courage, and fierce love.

Emma ran up to me, holding a slice of birthday cake on a paper plate. "Mommy! Look! I saved the biggest piece with the pink frosting for you!"

I knelt down on the grass, taking the plate from her small hands, and pulled her into a warm embrace. Lucas waddled over, tumbling right into my lap with a squeal of laughter.

I held both of my children close against my heart, feeling the warm evening breeze wash over us.

I had started that terrifying Friday night as a mother pushed into a dark corner, terrified that her baby was broken and her mind was lost. But in fighting back, I had stripped away the lies, destroyed a corrupt empire, and carved out a sanctuary where my children would never have to be afraid again.

"I love you, Mommy," Emma whispered into my shoulder.

"I love you too, my brave girl," I whispered back, looking up at the endless desert sky. "More than all the stars in the night."
