Chapter 5 - The Healing

An hour later, the rain had stopped, leaving the night air crisp and clean. Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the wet driveway as federal agents and paramedics cleared the scene. Grant Holloway was loaded into an armored ambulance under heavy police guard, facing life sentences for attempted murder, racketeering, and corporate treason.

Inside the quiet master study, the safe room door slid open.

Claire stepped out, carrying a sleeping Lily wrapped in her blanket. The little girl had cried herself to exhaustion and was now resting her head peacefully on Claire's shoulder.

Nathan was sitting near the desk, his gun gone, wearing a clean shirt. When he saw them step out, a visible tremor of relief passed through his muscular frame.

Claire walked over to him. Without saying a word, she lowered herself to her knees beside his wheelchair, setting her head gently against his lap.

Nathan reached down, his large, warm hand cupping the back of her head, his fingers weaving through her soft hair. He closed his eyes, leaning his head back, breathing in the scent of rain and lavender that clung to her.

"Are you okay?" Claire whispered into his lap.

"They'll never hurt you again," Nathan promised, his deep voice thick with emotion. "I swear it on my life, Claire."

Claire lifted her head, looking up into his dark gray eyes. "I wasn't worried about them hurting me. I was worried about losing you."

Nathan looked down at her face, touched by the absolute sincerity in her voice. For two years, he had believed his value as a man had died in the wreckage of his SUV on Wacker Drive. He had believed that without his physical power, he was half a man, deserving only of pity or betrayal.

But looking at Claire, and at the sleeping child in her arms, he realized the truth. Strength wasn't about standing on two feet. It was about having something worth fighting for.

Nathan leaned down and gently pressed his lips to Claire's.

The kiss was sweet, slow, and full of unspoken promises. Claire reached up, wrapping her free arm around his neck, pulling him closer as the last lingering shadows of fear melted away between them.

When he pulled back, a genuine, radiant smile illuminated his handsome face—the first real smile he had worn in over two years.

In her sleep, Lily shifted slightly, letting out a small sigh. Her tiny hand reached out, instinctively grabbing onto Nathan's thumb, holding it tight even in her dreams.

Nathan looked down at her tiny hand wrapping around his thumb, his heart swelling with a warmth he hadn't felt in a lifetime.

"She really thinks I'm a king, doesn't she?" Nathan murmured softly.

"She knows you are," Claire replied, smiling through her tears as she rested her hand over his. "And so do I."
