Chapter 7 - The Final Confrontation

We ran through the dark, concrete corridors of the subterranean bunker, lit only by the red emergency backup lights. The air was thick with the smell of gunpowder and salt water. The thunderous sound of heavy waves grew louder as we descended toward the ocean-level docks beneath the cliff.

We burst out onto a metal catwalk suspended above a natural sea cave. Down below, a high-speed speedboat was tied to the dock, its engines revving loudly.

Julian was dragging Ethan toward the boat, holding him close to his body as a human shield, his pistol pressed against Ethan's side. Two surviving bodyguards stood on the dock, firing up at the catwalk.

"Julian!" Adrian's voice boomed through the cavern, louder than the crashing ocean waves.

Julian stopped at the edge of the dock, turning slowly. He pulled Ethan closer, using the terrified boy to block his torso, raising his pistol toward the catwalk where we stood.

"Stay back, Adrian!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the damp cave walls. "Take one more step and I put a bullet in your son!"

I gasped, reaching for Adrian's arm, but Adrian stood completely still, his tactical rifle trained directly on Julian.

"Put the gun down, Julian," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of all emotion. "It's over. Your security team is dead. Your offshore accounts have been frozen. You have nowhere to go."

"I have the heir!" Julian screamed maniacally, his eyes wide with desperate rage. "As long as I have this boy, I have everything! You wouldn't risk shooting me while I'm holding him!"

Ethan was sobbing, looking up toward the catwalk. "Dad! Dad, help me!"

Adrian looked down at our son. His hand on the rifle didn't shake by a millimeter, but I saw the agony in his eyes.

"Ethan," Adrian said, his voice surprisingly soft, cutting through the roaring noise of the cave. "Do you remember what I told you at the hospital?"

Ethan blinked through his tears, looking up. "T-about baseball?"

"No, buddy," Adrian said gently. "About ducking when the pitcher throws high."

In that split second, Ethan understood. With a sudden, brave surge of energy, the seven-year-old boy dropped his weight entirely, dropping to his knees and slamming his body against the concrete dock.

Julian was caught off guard, his hold slipping for a fraction of a second as Ethan slid free.

Thwack!

A single suppressed shot rang out from Adrian's rifle.

The bullet struck Julian precisely in the shoulder, knocking him backward off the edge of the dock. He let out a sharp cry as he plunged into the freezing, churning waters of the dark sea cave below.

"Ethan!" I screamed, sprinting down the metal staircase faster than I ever had in my life.

I reached the dock and threw myself onto the concrete, grabbing Ethan into a fierce, desperate embrace. He buried his face in my neck, sobbing hysterically as I held him tight, kissing his hair, his face, his small hands.

"I've got you, baby! I've got you! You're safe!" I cried, tears streaming down my face.

Adrian descended the stairs slowly, dropping his rifle onto the dock. He knelt beside us, wrapping his massive arms around both of us, pulling us into his chest.

For the first time since I had met him ten years ago, Adrian Blackwood broke down. Silent, heavy tears spilled from his eyes as he pressed his face into Ethan's hair, holding us so tightly I could feel the frantic beating of his heart against my chest.

"I'm sorry," Adrian whispered, his voice cracking with immense emotion. "I'm so sorry I let them hurt you. I'm so sorry."

May you like

"You saved us," I whispered back, reaching out to stroke his face, wiping away his tears with my thumb. "You came for us."

He pulled me into a deep, tender kiss right there on the cold concrete dock, surrounded by the crashing ocean waves. The nightmare was finally over.
