Chapter 3 - The Blackwood Vault

The sound of blowing glass was immediately followed by shouting from the hallway. Adrian didn't hesitate. In one fluid movement, he yanked me behind him and drew a compact sidearm from beneath his suit jacket, training it on the shattered doorway.

"Stay behind me!" he commanded.

Through the dust and alarm sirens, two of Adrian's bodyguards retreated into the room, their weapons raised.

"Mr. Blackwood! Unknown tactical team entering through the West stairwell!" one of the security men yelled over the screech of the emergency system. "They bypassed hospital security! They have heavy armor!"

"They're after the child," Adrian said, his tone deadly calm. "Execute Egress Protocol Omega. Now."

The second guard pulled a heavy silver device from his belt and slammed it against the wall near the medical gas outlets. With a loud clack, an electromagnetic field scrambled the electronics in the room, plunging us into temporary darkness before the amber emergency lights kicked in.

"Claire, grab Ethan," Adrian ordered, turning to me. "Wrap him in the heated blanket. We have three minutes before they breach this floor."

My hands were shaking, but maternal instinct took over. I pulled the heavy thermal blanket around Ethan's tiny frame, lifting him carefully into my arms. He groaned softly, still dazed from the sedatives. "Mom... what's happening?"

"Shh, baby, I've got you. Just close your eyes," I whispered, holding him tight against my chest.

Adrian slammed his hand against a concealed panel near the room's utility column. A section of the wall slid backward with a heavy pneumatic hissed sound—a private service elevator built specifically for high-profile medical evacuations, accessible only via biometric authorization from Blackwood-funded facilities.

"Get in," Adrian instructed.

"Where does this go?" I demanded, holding Ethan tight.

"To the subterranean garage. My armored transport is waiting." Adrian pulled us into the lift just as gunshots echoed from the hallway outside. The heavy doors slammed shut, sealing us in silence as the elevator plummeted downward.

Within seconds, the doors opened into a dark, concrete sub-basement. A massive matte-black SUV with reinforced plating sat idling, its dark windows reflecting the dim halogen lights. A driver opened the rear door immediately.

"Get inside, both of you," Adrian said, pushing me gently into the back seat before climbing in beside us and locking the doors. The SUV accelerated instantly, roaring out of the underground facility into the rainy Pasadena night.

I stared out the dark tinted window as the hospital vanished behind us. My mind was spinning. Hours ago, I was managing inventory at a beauty supply store, worrying about rent. Now, I was in an armored vehicle, running from unknown attackers with the billionaire father I had abandoned seven years ago.

"Who were those people, Adrian?" I asked, my voice trembling as I stroked Ethan's damp hair. "You said your father was dead."

Adrian leaned back against the leather headrest, rubbing his temples. "He is. Arthur died of a stroke in January. But he didn't leave Blackwood Global to me entirely. He split the voting shares between me and his younger brother, my uncle Julian."

"Julian?" My throat tightened. I remembered Julian Blackwood—a cold, calculating man who operated in the shadows of the family business, controlling the firm's private security and dark asset divisions.

"Julian knew that if I had an heir, my controlling interest in the corporation would become absolute under the terms of my grandfather's trust," Adrian explained, turning his gaze toward me. "For seven years, Julian believed I was the last of the direct bloodline. The moment Ethan's genetic data hit the central registry, Julian realized he was about to lose everything."

"He tried to kill my son?" The horror of it made my blood run cold.

"He tried to secure him," Adrian corrected grimly. "Julian doesn't want Ethan dead—he wants him under his control. A hostage child gives him leverage over me for the rest of my life."

The SUV turned sharply, ascending a winding private road line with thick eucalyptus trees. We passed through a massive iron gate equipped with automated facial recognition scanners and armed guards.

"Where are we?" I asked as the vehicle pulled up in front of a sprawling, modern compound built into the cliffside overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

"The Vault," Adrian said, stepping out and offering me his hand. "It's my private residence in Malibu. It's built six stories into the bedrock. It's the safest place on the West Coast. No one gets in here without my explicit permission. Not even Julian."

I looked at his outstretched hand. Seven years of pain, fear, and pride told me to reject it. But looking at the pale face of my sleeping son, I knew I had no choice. I took his hand. His grip was warm, strong, and instantly familiar, sending a sharp jolt through my chest.

Inside, the compound was a stunning combination of cold architecture, high-tech security, and understated luxury. A medical team was already waiting in the main living area, equipped with advanced monitoring equipment.

"Set up the pediatric unit in the primary guest suite," Adrian commanded the lead physician. "Monitor his platelet levels every two hours."

The medical team gently took Ethan from my arms, transferring him to a mobile stretcher and wheeling him down a bright corridor. I made to follow them, but Adrian caught my wrist. His touch wasn't painful, but it was firm enough to stop me.

"He's safe, Claire. My personal doctors are the best in the country," Adrian said low. "Now you and I need to talk."

He led me into a massive study lined with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the crashing waves of the ocean far below. A fire roared in a stone fireplace, casting long shadows across the dark mahogany room.

"You should have come to me," Adrian said, turning to face me the moment the heavy doors closed. His voice was laced with an agonizing mixture of anger and grief. "When my father threatened you... how could you think I wouldn't protect you?"

"Protect me?" I let out a bitter laugh, tears stinging my eyes again. "Adrian, your father showed me photographs of what happened to people who crossed him! He had files on my mother, my sister, my entire family. He told me if I told you, he would make sure Ethan was born in a prison or not born at all!"

"I would have destroyed him for you!" Adrian slammed his fist onto the edge of his desk, the loud crack echoing through the room. "I would have burned the entire Blackwood empire to the ground before I let him touch a hair on your head!"

"You were twenty-six years old!" I yelled back, stepping toward him, my chest heaving. "You didn't control Blackwood Global then! He had all the power, Adrian! You were just his pawn, and I was nobody! If I had stayed, he would have killed our baby!"

Adrian stood still, his chest rising and falling heavily. He stared at me, the rage in his eyes slowly melting into a profound, crushing realization of what I had endured alone.

"You raised him by yourself," he whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "In a tiny apartment... working retail."

"I did what I had to do," I said quietly, wiping my cheeks. "I gave him a happy life, Adrian. He had laughter, he had love, he had normal birthdays. He didn't have money, but he was safe."

"Until today," Adrian said grimly.

"Until today," I agreed softly. "And now he's dragged into your world anyway."

Adrian walked toward me slowly. Each step was deliberate until he was standing inches away. He reached out, his long fingers hesitating before gently touching the side of my face. The warmth of his skin sent a shiver through my spine.

"I can't change the seven years we lost, Claire," he said, his gray eyes searching mine with a desperation I had never seen in him before. "I can't undo the fear my father caused you. But I swear on my life, no one will ever hide you or my son again. Julian thinks he can play the same games my father played. He's wrong."

"What are you going to do?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

"I'm going to take everything from him," Adrian said, his tone turning as cold as ice. "And then I'm going to bring our family home."

Before I could process his words, his satellite phone buzzed on the desk behind him. Adrian picked it up, glancing at the caller ID. His jaw tightened.

He pressed speaker.

"Hello, Adrian," a smooth, cultured voice rasped through the speaker. "I hear you had quite an eventful morning at San Gabriel Medical."

Julian Blackwood.

"Julian," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You made a mistake stepping into my city."

"Did I?" Julian chuckled dryly. "I merely wanted to welcome my grand-nephew to the family. It's such a shame his mother kept him hidden for so long. But now that the truth is out... the Board of Directors is very curious about the boy's existence. In fact, we've called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning at nine."

"To discuss what?" Adrian demanded.

"To discuss your fitness to lead Blackwood Global," Julian replied smoothly. "A CEO who hides an heir from the board for seven years... or a CEO who was so incompetent he didn't know he had a son... neither looks good on the annual report, nephew. Bring the boy to the board meeting tomorrow to verify his claim. Or I will file an emergency petition to freeze all family trusts, including yours."

The call disconnected.

Adrian slowly laid the phone down on the desk. He looked up at me, his eyes blazing with a dark, dangerous light.

"He wants a war," Adrian whispered. "I'll give him one."
