Chapter 6 - The Island Fortress

The helicopter touched down on a private concrete pad surrounded by dense forest and jagged dark rocks. Through the window, I could hear the crashing sound of heavy ocean waves. We were on an island—a remote, private outpost off the coast of Northern California, completely isolated from civilization.
Julian stepped out first, followed by his guards who dragged me and Ethan toward a fortress-like estate made of concrete and dark stone, surrounded by high chain-link fences topped with razor wire.
We were pushed into a large, cold room with floor-to-ceiling reinforced glass overlooking the stormy ocean. Ethan was sobbing, exhaustion and fear taking a heavy toll on his fragile body. I dropped to my knees, holding him close with my bound hands, trying to shield him with my body.
"Shh, baby, it's okay. Daddy is going to find us," I whispered into his hair, though fear gnawed at my own heart. Did Adrian even know where we were?
The door opened, and Julian walked in, holding two glasses of scotch. He sat down in a leather armchair across from us, taking a slow sip.
"You really believe Adrian can save you, don't you, Claire?" Julian asked, a cruel smile touching his lips. "You think love conquers all. How romantic. But this isn't a fairy tale. This is corporate warfare."
"You're a monster," I said, glaring at him with pure hatred. "He's a seven-year-old child! He's your own blood!"
"Blood is just a biological variable, my dear," Julian replied coldly. "By tomorrow morning, I will have signed papers making me Ethan's legal guardian due to your 'unstable background' and Adrian's upcoming 'unfortunate legal troubles'. With Ethan under my guardianship, I control his voting shares in Blackwood Global. I will have total control of the company."
"And what happens to us after you get what you want?" I asked, my voice trembling.
Julian looked at me with cold indifference. "You will be relocated to a permanent, comfortable facility in South America. You'll never see California again. But don't worry... Ethan will be raised with the finest education money can buy. He will become the leader my father always wanted Adrian to be."
"No!" Ethan suddenly screamed from behind me, his small voice echoing in the room. "I don't want you! I want my dad!"
Julian's eyes narrowed as he looked at the boy. "Quiet, child. You will learn to obey me."
Before Julian could stand up, a sudden thunderous sound echoed from the sky outside. The glass windows vibrated as the shadow of a massive, twin-rotor military-grade transport helicopter descended over the estate.
Julian froze, setting his scotch down. "What is that?"
Before his guards could respond, the compound's perimeter alarms exploded into a deafening blare. A second later, the lights inside the estate flickered and went out as a high-altitude EMP burst scrambled the power grid.
Gunfire rattled through the courtyard outside, accompanied by the muffled thud of flashbang grenades.
"He's here," I whispered, relief washing over me like a tidal wave. "Adrian is here."
Julian's face twisted in rage. He drew his pistol and grabbed Ethan by the arm, ripping him away from me.
"Ethan!" I screamed, lunging forward despite my hands being tied. A guard kicked me in the stomach, knocking the air out of my lungs and sending me crashing to the floor.
"Bring the woman!" Julian barked, dragging a crying Ethan toward a back security door. "We're going to the lower dock!"
I choked for air, pushing myself off the cold floor. The guard grabbed my hair, pulling me up, but before he could drag me out, the heavy oak doors of the room were blown inward off their hinges by a breaching charge.
The explosion blew the guard backward. Through the smoke, two men in black tactical gear rushed in, taking out the remaining guards with swift, silenced shots.
Behind them stepped Adrian.
He wasn't wearing a suit anymore. He wore dark tactical gear, a combat belt, and his face was smeared with dark greasepaint, but his cold gray eyes were instantly recognizable. He looked like a demon emerging from the shadow of hell.
"Claire!" he shouted, spotting me on the floor.
In three strides, he was at my side. He pulled a combat knife from his vest and sliced through the plastic zip-tie binding my wrists in one smooth motion.
"Are you hurt?" he demanded, taking my face in his hands, his eyes frantically scanning my body for injuries.
"I'm fine! I'm fine!" I gasped, clutching his arms. "Julian took Ethan! He took him toward the lower dock!"
Adrian's expression hardened into pure iron. He pulled a small silver transmitter from his vest and pressed it into my hand. "Stay with my men. They will escort you to the chopper."
May you like
"No! I'm coming with you!" I demanded, grabbing his tactical vest. "I'm not letting him out of my sight again!"
Adrian looked at me for a fraction of a second, seeing the unyielding determination in my eyes. "Stay behind me. Don't stop moving."
