Chapter 10 - The Promise on the Bluff

Six months later.

Spring had arrived, bringing mild weather and blooming greenery along the shores of Lake Michigan. Two hours north of Chicago, on a quiet bluff overlooking the water, stood a restored two-story wooden home surrounded by tall pines. It was far removed from the busy streets of the financial district and the formal reception halls of the city.

The house featured wide porches, stone chimneys, and large windows that captured the changing light off the lake.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, a light rain fell softly against the porch roof. Matteo stood near the wooden railing, wearing a simple white shirt with rolled sleeves. He held a glass of water, watching the gentle movement of the lake below. He looked completely rested, his expression clear and untroubled.

Footsteps sounded behind him as Isabella stepped onto the porch in a simple cotton dress. She moved closer, and Matteo wrapped his arms around her waist, resting his chin against her shoulder as they watched the rain together.

“The foundation documents were recorded this morning,” Isabella said softly, leaning back against his chest. “Construction on the first center begins next month.”

“Sarah sent over the final confirmation,” Matteo smiled, pressing a light kiss to her cheek. “She mentioned I’m taking longer to return calls these days.”

“What did you tell her?”

“I told her I was busy watching the lake.”

Isabella laughed—that clear, genuine sound that had captured his attention months ago.

Matteo gently turned her around to face him. He looked down at her, taking in her steady gaze, her gentle smile, and the quiet comfort she brought into his world. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

He didn't make a grand spectacle or choose a crowded venue. He simply stood on the quiet porch of their home, opening the box to reveal a timeless diamond ring.

“Isabella,” Matteo said, his voice steady and full of quiet warmth. “A year ago, I was a man who managed an empire but owned very little of his own peace. You stepped into my life, looked past the title, and asked me who I was when nobody was watching.”

He lifted the ring, holding her hand gently.

“I want to spend the rest of my life building an answer with you,” Matteo said softly. “Will you marry me?”

May you like

Isabella’s eyes shone with quiet happiness as she smiled up at him. “Yes, Matteo. Yes.”

As he slid the ring onto her finger and pulled her into a warm embrace, the rain slowed, leaving the sky clear over the open water.
