Chapter 6 - A Moment of Calm

The street in Lincoln Park was quiet, lined with fallen autumn leaves under dim streetlights. Matteo walked up the brownstone steps and knocked on Isabella’s door.
When it opened, Isabella stood there in a gray sweater. She took in his damp coat and pale expression, saying nothing about the news or the drama filling the broadcasts. She simply opened the door wider.
“Come in,” she said quietly. “I’ll make some tea.”
Inside, her apartment was warm and still. Books filled the wooden shelves, and the air carried the scent of cinnamon and woodsmoke. Matteo sat on the sofa, feeling the immediate contrast between this quiet space and the pressure of the executive suite.
Isabella brought two mugs from the kitchen, setting them down and taking a seat across from him.
“How complicated is it?” she asked gently.
“If I can’t verify the original Genoa records by Friday,” Matteo said, looking down at his tea, “the board will be forced to restructure control. And I’ll be facing an official inquiry.”
“Is that what worries you most?” Isabella asked. “The inquiry?”
“No,” Matteo considered her question. “What worries me is that if Vance takes control, the foundation work my grandfather built disappears. Thousands of workers lose their coverage, and Julian sells off the divisions for quick capital.”
He looked up, his expression guarded but sincere. “And I dragged your name into the middle of this. The press will eventually link our dinner at The Aurelia to the story.”
Isabella reached across the table, placing her hand gently over his. Matteo paused at the touch.
“Let them print what they want,” Isabella said calmly. “A headline doesn't define who I am, Matteo. And it doesn't define you—unless you let it.”
“I’m used to managing every detail,” Matteo said softly, his fingers closing around hers.
“You don't have to manage everything right now,” Isabella replied gently. “You just have to take it one step at a time.”
Matteo looked at her, the constant calculation running through his mind finally slowing down. In the warm quiet of her living room, as rain tapped against the glass, he leaned forward. Isabella met his gaze without hesitation.

When he kissed her, it was entirely unhurried—a quiet, grounded moment stripped of pretense. Isabella rested her hand against his cheek, pulling him closer as the noise of the outside world faded completely away.
For the first time in his career, Matteo Rossi wasn't analyzing strategy or preparing for a defense. He was simply present, anchored by the woman sitting beside him.
