Chapter 8 - The Public Reckoning

The ballroom of the Peninsula Hotel was packed by nine the next morning. Over three hundred shareholders, reporters, and market analysts filled the rows of seating facing the main stage.
Arthur Vance stood behind the lectern, looking confident in a dark suit. Beside him, Julian Rossi sat quietly, attempting to maintain an air of grave authority despite the slight tremor in his hands.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Vance’s voice echoed through the sound system. “We have convened this assembly to address the serious irregularities within Rossi Holdings. The evidence regarding unreported offshore transfers under Matteo Rossi’s authority is clear.”
Vance pressed a button, displaying the altered August 2022 manifest on the large screens behind him.
“This file bears Matteo Rossi’s private verification,” Vance continued. “In light of these findings, Julian Rossi has formally requested that the board initiate an immediate management restructuring.”
A murmur spread through the audience as camera lights flashed continuously.
“A dramatic presentation, Vance,” a calm, clear voice echoed from the back of the room.
The double doors opened. Matteo Rossi walked down the center aisle. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, moving with quiet, unbothered confidence. Beside him walked Isabella, composed and graceful in a simple navy dress, her hand resting comfortably on his arm. Behind them walked two representatives from the SEC alongside an international courier carrying sealed folders.
Julian stood up abruptly. “Matteo! You don't have the floor!”
“I hold fifty-two percent of the voting stock in this room, Julian,” Matteo said smoothly as he reached the stage. “I have every right to speak.”
Matteo stepped up to the secondary microphone, looking directly at the audience.
“Mr. Vance has presented a manifest claiming forty million dollars cleared Dock 4 at the Port of Genoa on August 12th, 2022,” Matteo stated, gesturing toward the screen.
“The record speaks for itself!” Vance insisted.
“It does,” Matteo agreed calmly. “It speaks to a complete lack of basic research. On August 12th, 2022, Dock 4 in Genoa was closed under Italian Municipal Order 402 following a crane failure. No vessel or cargo cleared that dock for six months.”
A heavy silence settled over the room.
Matteo gestured to the courier beside him. “We have provided certified port authority records to the SEC representatives present today, proving that the file shown on that screen was created four days ago from an IP address registered to Arthur Vance’s holding firm.”
The display screen flickered, replacing the manifest with verified server logs and official municipal notices from Genoa.
Gasps rippled through the audience. Cameras flashed frantically. Vance’s face turned pale as he glanced at Julian, who looked visibly shaken.
“This is an administrative error—” Vance began, backing away from the lectern.
“It is document forgery and an attempt to manipulate public markets,” Matteo corrected firmly. “And the authorities at the back of the room are here to process the filings.”
Federal officers stepped onto the stage, approaching Vance and Julian. As Julian was escorted past his cousin, his expression was a mix of shock and anger.
“You destroyed the family position!” Julian muttered.
“You destroyed your own position, Julian,” Matteo replied quietly. “You traded integrity for a shortcut.”

As Vance and Julian were led out of the ballroom, the room broke into loud applause from the gathered shareholders. Matteo stood at the podium, his reputation completely cleared and his standing as CEO firmer than ever.
He looked past the applause and the flashing cameras, locking eyes with Isabella standing near the side of the stage. She offered a soft, proud smile—not for the corporate victory, but for the man who had faced the storm without losing himself.
