Chapter 8 - The Healing Heart

Three months after the raid at the marina, warmth had returned to the Varric estate.

The bullet holes in the walls had been repaired, the shattered stained glass replaced with warm, gold-tinted crystal, and the dark, sterile atmosphere of the house had transformed completely. Bright flowers filled the grand foyer, sunlight streamed through the tall windows, and the sound of soft music floated through the rooms.

The Varric family had fully transitioned out of organized crime, selling their illicit assets and launching a multi-billion-dollar international shipping and clean energy logistics firm. The shadows that had haunted Matteo’s legacy for generations were finally gone.

In the second-floor nursery, Liana sat on a soft sheepskin rug, wearing a simple pale blue dress.

Nico, now a healthy, chubby one-year-old with a full head of dark curls, was crawling energetic laps around her, letting out joyful giggles as he tried to catch a bouncing red rubber ball.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Matteo walked into the room. He wore a relaxed white linen shirt with rolled-up sleeves and dark trousers—looking younger, healthier, and happier than he ever had in his life. The cold, dangerous mob boss had dissolved, leaving behind a proud, devoted father.

He knelt down on the rug, pulling Nico into a big bear hug, causing the boy to squeal with delight and pat his father's cheeks with sticky hands.

"Look who learned how to stand up by himself today," Liana smiled, resting her chin on her hand as she watched them.

"Really?" Matteo looked up, his amber eyes shining with pride. "Without holding onto the crib?"

"Without holding onto anything," Liana confirmed softly. "He took two small steps toward me before he tumbled into my lap."

Matteo set Nico down and looked at Liana. The quiet tenderness in his gaze sent a gentle wave of heat through her chest. Over the past three months, their connection had grown far beyond that of an employer and a guardian. They had become inseparable—sharing late-night dinners, long walks through the estate gardens, and quiet moments holding Nico together.

"I have a surprise for you," Matteo said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small velvet box.

Liana’s breath hitched. "Matteo... what is that?"

Matteo didn't open the box for a proposal just yet. Instead, he opened it to reveal a sleek silver key attached to a dark leather keychain engraved with a small golden heart.

"What is this key for?" Liana asked, confused.

"I had my team search Queens two weeks ago," Matteo explained softly, taking her small hand into his large, warm palm. "I bought the small Victorian house on 5th Street—the one with the big garden in the back."

Liana gasped, her eyes filling with instant tears. "That... that was my mother’s dream house. The one we could never afford."

"It's yours now," Matteo whispered gently, squeezing her fingers. "Fully paid for, registered in your name. And... I had a private memorial garden built in the backyard. A quiet, beautiful place with white roses... for your baby boy."

Liana covered her mouth, tears spilling over her lashes. The pain of her loss, which had weighed on her heart like a mountain for months, suddenly felt lighter, washed over by an overwhelming wave of love and gratitude.

"You didn't have to do that, Matteo," she sobbed softly.

"I did," Matteo said, leaning closer, his voice thick with emotion. "Because you saved my son, Liana. You saved my life. You brought love back into a house that was dying in the dark. I want to make sure your heart is healed, too."

Liana looked at the key, then up into Matteo’s warm, loving amber eyes.

She leaned forward and pressed her lips against his in a sweet, deep, breathless kiss.

Matteo wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close, responding with a fierce, passionate tenderness that communicated everything words could never say.

At their feet, Nico let out a happy babble, clapping his tiny hands together and bumping his head against Matteo’s knee, making them both break into soft, breathless laughter.
