Chapter 7 - The Marina Trap

Midnight at the Long Island Marina was pitch black, thick with a heavy coastal fog that rolled off the dark waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The air smelled of salt, diesel fuel, and damp wood.

Huge rusting cargo containers were stacked three stories high along the concrete pier, casting long, ominous shadows under the flickering yellow streetlamps.

A single white minivan pulled onto the pier, its headlights slicing through the dense fog.

Liana sat in the driver's seat, her hands clutched tightly around the steering wheel. In the back seat, secured safely in a rear-facing car seat, sat Nico. He was sleeping peacefully, wearing a pair of noise-canceling headphones Liana had put on him to protect his ears from whatever was about to happen.

Underneath her dark coat, Liana wore a sleek bulletproof vest provided by Julian, along with a tiny encrypted micro-transmitter hidden inside her collar.

"I’m in position, boss," Liana whispered into her collar mic.

Five hundred yards away, hidden inside an elevated shipping container overlooking the pier, Matteo sat with a high-powered sniper rifle resting on a tripod, staring through a night-vision thermal scope.

"I have eyes on you, Liana," Matteo’s deep, steady voice echoed through her earpiece, bringing an instant wave of warmth to her chest. "You're doing great. Stay calm. The moment her car appears, my team moves into perimeter locking positions."

"I’m not scared," Liana lied, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"You don't have to be," Matteo replied softly. "I am watching you through this scope. Nobody touches a hair on your head tonight. I swear it on my life."

A set of dark headlights appeared through the fog at the end of the pier.

A sleek black armored sedan pulled up thirty feet from Liana's minivan, its high beams flashing three times—the agreed signal.

The sedan's doors opened. Two heavy guards in black coats stepped out, taking positions near the bumper, their hands tucked inside their jackets. Then, the rear door opened, and Elena Varric stepped out onto the damp concrete.

She looked stunning and cold, wearing a long fur coat, her silver ring catching the faint streetlamp light.

Liana took a deep breath, opened her door, and stepped out into the freezing fog, shutting the door behind her.

"Where is the boy?" Elena demanded, stepping forward, a victorious smile touching her red lips.

"He's in the back seat, asleep," Liana said, forcing her voice to sound trembling and greedy, playing the part of the desperate maid. "Do you have the money?"

Elena motioned to one of her guards, who lifted a heavy black duffel bag and tossed it onto the concrete between them. It landed with a heavy thud, the zipper sliding open slightly to reveal stacks of hundred-dollar bills.

"One million dollars in clean cash," Elena sneered. "A fortune for a pathetic little servant girl who sweeps floors. Now move away from the car."

Liana didn't move. She stood her ground, blocking the minivan door. "How do I know you won't kill me the moment I walk away?"

Elena let out a short, mocking laugh, drawing a silver pistol from her coat pocket. "Because you're not worth the bullet, darling. Now step aside!"

"Now, boss!" Liana screamed into her collar!

BANG!

A thunderous sniper shot shattered the night! The guard holding the duffel bag was knocked off his feet as a high-caliber round tore through his shoulder!

Before Elena could react, the side walls of four adjacent cargo containers burst open with blinding speed! Heavy steel doors dropped, and dozens of Matteo’s elite strike forces poured out onto the pier, flashbangs exploding in a terrifying display of light and sound!

"AMBUSH!" Elena shrieked, firing wildly toward Liana as she lunged back toward her armored sedan!

Liana dove behind the rear tire of the minivan as bullets ricocheted off the steel pavement!

"Liana, get down!" Matteo’s voice roared through her earpiece!

From his elevated sniper position, Matteo fired two more precision shots, exploding the front tires of Elena’s sedan, pinning her against the vehicle as his ground forces swarmed the pier, dropping the remaining Moretti guards in seconds!

Chaos erupted, but Matteo’s men moved with terrifying, surgical precision. Within two minutes, the gunfire ceased, leaving only the sound of sea waves and the groan of wounded men.

Matteo vaulted down from the shipping container, sprinting across the concrete pier with frantic speed, completely ignoring the remaining threats as he rushed straight to Liana!

He dropped to his knees beside her, grabbing her shoulders, his eyes wild with panic. "Liana! Are you hit?! Look at me! Are you hurt?!"

Liana looked up at him, her heart soaring as she saw the sheer, unadulterated terror in his face—terror for her.

"I'm okay," she gasped, smiling through the adrenaline. "I'm okay, Matteo."

Matteo let out a ragged, shaking breath, pulling her violently into his arms and burying his face into her neck, holding her so tight she could barely breathe. "Thank God... thank God..." he whispered, his body trembling against hers.

A harsh, bitter laugh broke their moment.

Ten feet away, Elena was pinned against the hood of her wrecked car, handcuffed by Julian. Her fur coat was ruined, her face smudged with soot, but her blue eyes were filled with pure, poisonous venom as she watched Matteo holding the maid.

"Look at you, Matteo," Elena spat, blood dripping from her lip. "The great Don Varric, weeping over a servant girl. You’re pathetic."

Matteo slowly stood up, turning to face the woman who had ruined his life. He walked over to her, his posture tall, imposing, and devoid of any lingering mercy.

"You lost, Elena," Matteo said coldly.

"You think this is over?" Elena sneered. "My father controls the European supply lines! He will tear your empire apart stone by stone! You'll never be safe!"

"Your father was arrested twenty minutes ago in Palermo by the Italian Anti-Mafia Task Force," Matteo revealed, pulling a document from his pocket and throwing it onto the hood of the car. "I traded all of Moretti’s offshore financial records to the Federal government in exchange for full immunity for my family. The Moretti syndicate no longer exists."

Elena’s face went dead white. The smug, arrogant mask she had worn her entire life completely shattered into absolute, terrifying ruin. "No... no, that’s impossible!"

"Take her away," Matteo commanded Julian without looking back. "She will spend the rest of her life in a federal maximum-security prison."

As Julian dragged the screaming, hysterical woman away into a waiting police transport, Matteo turned back to Liana, who was opening the rear door of the minivan to check on Nico.

The baby had slept through the entire event thanks to his headphones, fast asleep, clutching his tiny wooden ring.

Matteo walked up behind Liana, looking down at his son, then at the extraordinary woman standing beside him.

The cold night air felt different now—no longer filled with fear and secrets, but clear, fresh, and wide open.
