Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Late that evening, after the gala had ended and the guests had departed, the family returned to the Moretti estate.
The house was quiet, but it was a warm, welcoming silence filled with the ambient glow of low lamps and the crackle of the stone fireplace in the main living room.
Leo had fallen asleep on the drive home, exhausted from the excitement of the night. Rocco carefully carried his son up the stairs, tucked him into his warm bed, and kissed his forehead before gently closing the door.
Downstairs, Elena was sitting by the fire, holding a cup of herbal tea. Sophia was already asleep on the plush sofa, wrapped in a fleece blanket.
Rocco walked in softly, pouring himself a small glass of water, and sat in the armchair across from Elena.
"You looked beautiful tonight, Elena," Rocco said quietly.
Elena blushed, looking down at her tea. "Thank you, Rocco. I... I still feel like I'm living in a dream sometimes. A year ago, I was terrified of how I would afford Sophia's school books. Now..."
"Now you are the heart of this home," Rocco said softly. "Elena... I want to talk to you about the future."
Elena looked up, her soft brown eyes meeting his. "The future?"
Rocco reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee like a young boy, but the intense, earnest look in his dark eyes was undeniable.
"This house was built on blood and secrets," Rocco said, opening the box to reveal a simple, stunning diamond ring that caught the firelight. "I spent most of my life surrounded by people who wanted something from me. But you and Sophia... you gave me my son back. You gave me my humanity back."
Elena’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes welled with tears.
"I don't offer you a life of crime or danger, Elena," Rocco said, his voice trembling slightly with genuine emotion. "That life is dead and buried. I offer you my loyalty, my protection, and my heart for the rest of my days. Will you marry me, and make this family truly whole?"
Elena looked from the sparkling ring to the face of the man who had transformed from a feared mafia monarch into a devoted father and protector.
"Yes, Rocco," Elena whispered, tears of happiness spilling over her eyelashes. "Yes, a thousand times yes."
From the sofa, a tiny voice piped up with a giggle.

"I knew it!" Sophia giggled, poking her head out from under the fleece blanket, her eyes sparkling with delight. "I told Leo you were going to ask her tonight!"
Rocco laughed out loud—a deep, joyful laugh that echoed through the magnificent halls—and pulled both Elena and Sophia into a warm embrace by the glowing fire.
