Chapter 5 - The Trial of Blood

The Grand Hotel’s subterranean conference room was neutral ground—a place where the five ruling crime families of the city met to settle disputes without bloodshed.
Huge chandeliers hung from the coffered ceiling, illuminating a massive round oak table. At the head of the table sat Don Castiglione—an elderly man with silver hair, sharp blue eyes, and a silk suit that concealed the soul of a viper. Surrounding him were the bosses of the other three families, along with their high-priced lawyers and capos.
When the double doors swung open, Rocco Moretti walked in alone.
He wore no armor. He carried no visible weapon. In his right hand, he held a simple black leather briefcase. Behind him, standing at the door, were Thomas Russo and two armed guards, but Rocco stepped into the center of the room by himself.
"Rocco," Don Castiglione said, his voice smooth and oozing fake sympathy. "We were just talking about you. We heard terrible news. Your wife... missing. Shots fired at your estate. We were worried you had suffered a breakdown after all these years of grief."
The other bosses at the table looked uncomfortable, shifting in their leather chairs.
Rocco didn't answer right away. He walked slowly to the empty chair across from Castiglione and rested his hands on the high backrest.
"Seven years ago, Castiglione," Rocco began, his voice echoing clearly off the wood paneling, "my wife Valentina told me my newborn son died at St. Helena Hospital. I believed her. I mourned. I gave away his clothes. I buried an empty coffin."
Castiglione sighed, shaking his head. "Tragic memories, Rocco. But why bring up old painful wounds today?"
"Because last night," Rocco continued, opening his briefcase with two crisp snaps of the brass locks, "an eight-year-old maid's daughter found a child wrapped in a plastic bag in my trash bin."
Rocco pulled out a thick stack of medical files, throwing them onto the center of the table. They scattered across the polished oak, exposing red-stamped hospital logos, prescription records for heavy sedatives, and bank transfer receipts.
"That child wasn't a baby," Rocco said, pointing a finger directly at Castiglione. "That child was seven years old. Stunted. Starved. Kept in a private basement clinic paid for by your shell corporation, Castiglione-Holdings LLC."
The room erupted into mutters. The boss of the Maroni family picked up one of the bank receipts, his eyes widening as he read the names and amounts.
"This is madness!" Castiglione shouted, slamming his hand on the table as he stood up. "This is a fabrication! A desperate frame job by a man who lost his mind!"
"Is it?" Rocco asked calmly.
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a digital audio recorder. He pressed Play.
Valentina’s screeching voice filled the high-ceilinged room: “I was going to dispose of him tonight because the Castigliones terminated the agreement! They didn't need the boy anymore! He was a loose end!”
The silence that followed was absolute.
Don Castiglione’s face turned gray. His hands trembled as he looked around the table at the other crime bosses. The unwritten law of the Syndicate was absolute: Children were off-limits. You could kill a rival, you could steal territory, you could bribe politicians—but stealing a rival’s child and keeping him in a cage for seven years was a violation that meant immediate death.
"You broke the code," Boss Maroni said, his voice thick with disgust as he backed his chair away from Castiglione. "You brought dishonor on all of us."
"Wait!" Castiglione panicked, looking at his own bodyguards. "It was Valentina's idea! She came to me! She wanted the money!"
"It doesn't matter whose idea it was," Rocco said softly. He looked at his watch. "In exactly thirty seconds, Federal Agents and the District Attorney will raid this room. I gave them the location five minutes ago."
"You called the Feds?!" Castiglione screamed, pulling a hidden gun from beneath his jacket. "You broke the silence rule?!"
BANG!
Before Castiglione could raise his gun, Thomas Russo fired from the doorway. The bullet struck Castiglione’s wrist, sending his gun flying across the table.
Heavy footsteps pounded outside. The grand oak doors were kicked open, and dozens of armed FBI agents swarmed into the room, shouting orders and forcing every boss and lawyer to the floor.
Rocco stood perfectly still amidst the chaos, his hands at his sides, as an FBI Lead Agent walked up to him.
"Rocco Moretti," Agent Vance said. "You delivered on your promise."

"The evidence is all there, Agent," Rocco said, looking down at Castiglione, who was being cuffed on the floor, weeping and cursing. "Take them all. The Moretti family is done with this war."
Rocco turned and walked out of the hotel, leaving the remnants of the city's criminal underworld behind him forever.
