Chapter 6 - The Long Road to Healing

Three months had passed since the night of the raid.
The Moretti estate had changed dramatically. The dark, somber halls that once smelled of expensive cigars and cold fear were now filled with the light of morning sun streaming through uncurtained windows. The heavy security guards were still present, but they no longer wore tactical gear—they were dressed in sharp suits, acting more like quiet protectors than an invading army.
Upstairs, in a newly painted bedroom filled with warm wood tones, soft blue rugs, and shelves of wooden toys, young Leo sat on a soft carpet.
His recovery had been slow, but miraculous. Under the care of specialized physical therapists and pediatric nutritionists, he was finally gaining weight. His hair had grown thick and shiny, and for the first time in his life, his eyes held a sparkle of curiosity instead of fear.
Sitting across from him on the floor was Sophia. She was showing him how to build a tall tower using colored wooden blocks.
"See, Leo?" Sophia said gently, placing a red block on top. "You have to put the big ones at the bottom, or it will fall over when the wind blows."
Leo reached out his small, thin hand. His movement was still somewhat clumsy, but he carefully picked up a blue block and placed it balanced right on top of hers. He looked up at her and gave a small, toothy smile.
From the open doorway, Rocco stood watching the scene.
He was no longer wearing his dark armor-like suits. Today, he wore a simple charcoal sweater and slacks. The cold, unyielding look in his eyes had been replaced by a quiet, profound peace.
Elena walked up beside him, carrying a tray of freshly squeezed orange juice and warm fruit pastries.
"He spoke three full words today, Don Rocco," Elena whispered, her face glowing with pride.
"What did he say?" Rocco asked, his heart thumping in his chest.
"He looked at Sophia and said... 'My sister Sophia,'" Elena replied, a tear of joy slipping down her cheek.
Rocco swallowed the lump in his throat. He stepped into the room and sat down on the carpet right beside his son and the little girl who had saved him.
"Can I play too?" Rocco asked gently.
Leo looked at his father. For the first few weeks, the boy had been terrified of tall men. But over the months, Rocco had spent every night sleeping on a chair beside Leo’s bed, holding his hand whenever he had nightmares, reading him stories until the sun came up. Leo knew this giant man was his shield.
Leo reached into his small pocket and pulled out the gold pocket watch Rocco had given to Sophia on the night of the attack. Sophia had officially passed it to Leo as a gift when he recovered.
Leo held the gold watch out to Rocco. "Papa," he said, his voice clear and sweet. "Time to build."

Rocco choked back an emotion so powerful it threatened to break his tough exterior completely. He wrapped his arm around his son and pulled Sophia in for a warm embrace.
"Yes, Leo," Rocco murmured, kissing his son’s forehead. "It's time to build."
