Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

Two years later, the snow had returned to Chester County, transforming the Caruso estate into a pristine, silent wonderland.
Inside the main manor, a massive log fire crackled in the stone hearth. Maeve sat in a deep leather armchair by the window, a cup of hot tea resting in her hands as she watched the snowflakes drift past the glass.
Across the room, Dante sat at his mahogany desk, reviewing financial ledgers for the sanctuary's upcoming expansion into neighboring states.
And lying directly between them on the thick Persian rug was Argos.
Though he had aged gracefully, the 140-pound Cane Corso was still as formidable as ever. His dark coat shone in the firelight, and though his eyes remained sightless, his head rested comfortably across Maeve’s booted foot, anchoring her in place.
A soft knock sounded at the study door, and Vance—Dante’s long-time head of security—stepped quietly into the room.
"Everything is secure for the night, boss," Vance reported quietly. "Perimeter patrols are set, and the transport vehicles are locked down."
"Thank you, Vance," Dante said without looking up from his papers. "Get some rest."
Vance nodded, casting an affectionate glance toward the massive dog before slipping back out and closing the heavy oak doors.
Silence settled over the room once more, filled only by the crackle of the fire and the steady, rhythmic breathing of the dog who had survived an impossible betrayal.
Maeve set her teacup down and slid out of her chair, kneeling beside Argos. She buried her hands in his thick fur, whispering softly into his ear. The dog responded by giving her hand a gentle, clumsy lick before letting out a long, contented sigh.
Dante stood up from his desk, walking slowly across the room until he stood beside her. He knelt down as well, placing his hand over hers on the dog's massive shoulder.

"You know," Dante said softly, looking from the dog to Maeve’s eyes, "when I found him in the snow two years ago, I thought I was looking at the end of an era."
"You weren't," Maeve smiled, resting her head against Dante's shoulder as the firelight danced across the walls of the warm, secure home they had built together. "You were just looking at the beginning."
