Chapter 3 - The Bloodline Ledger

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second as his eyes met the milky, sightless gaze of the beast he thought he had successfully disposed of.
"Kill it," Julian snarled, his hand snapping downward. "Now!"
The tactical operative on the left raised his weapon, his finger tightening on the trigger.
Bang.
The shot didn't come from Julian’s men.
A heavy slug punched through the metal doorframe inches from the operative's head, sending a shower of splinters and plaster raining down across the floor. From the front lobby, a second gunshot echoed through the clinic—sharp, deafening, and authoritative.
"Drop your weapons! Chester County SWAT! Drop them now!"
Shout after shout reverberated from the front entrance as heavy boots swarmed the corridor. A tactical flashbang clattered across the linoleum near the hallway intersection, blinding white light and a concussive shockwave filling the space in an instant.
Julian’s men scrambled, disoriented and caught in a fatal crossfire between Dante’s tactical precision and the sudden arrival of county law enforcement.
"Federal warrant, Julian!" a deep voice boomed from the doorway.
Dante didn't lower his gun, but he shifted slightly, keeping his body positioned between the tactical officers and the treatment table where Argos lay panting heavily from the disturbance.
Julian, coughing from the smoke and white powder of the flashbang, backed away toward the rear emergency exit, his hands raised mockingly in the air. "You think this is over, Uncle? The Commission voted on this last night! You're out! And that dog is the key to the whole operation!"
"Take him," Dante commanded quietly to the nearest officer as Julian slipped out through the broken back door into the swirling snow.
Two state troopers sprinted past the threshold in pursuit, their flashlights cutting through the gloom.
Silence descended upon the treatment room once more, broken only by the hiss of oxygen and the ragged breathing of the Cane Corso. Maeve stepped out from behind the counter, her hands shaking violently as she clutched a roll of sterile gauze. She looked from Dante to the smoking barrel of his concealed firearm, then down at Argos, who had lowered his head back onto the cold steel, exhausted by the sudden chaos.
"Who are you really?" Maeve whispered, her voice cracking. "What is that dog involved in?"
Dante slowly lowered his weapon, sliding it back into its holster beneath his coat. He looked older now, the adrenaline fading to leave behind the profound, heavy fatigue of a man carrying an empire on his shoulders.
"Argos isn't just a guard dog, Maeve," Dante said softly, stepping back to the side of the table. "He was trained at a secure facility in upstate New York to carry encrypted micro-storage capsules beneath his skin during transit. When Julian tried to seize control of our logistics network last week, he tried to harvest the data chip embedded behind the dog's left ear."

Maeve stared at him, horror washing over her. "They operated on him themselves?"
"Without anesthesia," Dante replied, his voice hardening like ice. "They thought he wouldn't survive. They dumped him in the snow to hide the evidence. But they underestimated his loyalty."
