Chapter 7 - Shadows Lifted

Spring arrived in Pennsylvania with an explosion of wildflowers across the hillsides, turning the landscape into a vibrant tapestry of green and gold.
Inside the newly established Hart Sanctuary at the Caruso estate, the morning routine was already well underway. Maeve stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the rehabilitation center, reviewing digital charts on her tablet while watching Argos navigate the indoor obstacle course with the confidence of a dog who knew every inch of his territory.
Using his acute hearing and heightened sense of smell, the 140-pound Cane Corso bypassed a series of low agility barriers, making a beeline straight for the open doorway where Dante stood holding a leather leash and a handful of treats.
"He's cheating," Maeve called out with a smile, leaning against the counter. "He smells the turkey strips in your pocket from ten feet away."
"That's not cheating, Dr. Hart," Dante replied, stepping into the clinic with a warm chuckle. "That's advanced tactical reconnaissance."
Argos reached Dante, sitting down heavily on his haunches and offering a massive paw in exchange for his morning reward. Dante rewarded him generously, scratching behind his ears while watching Maeve walk over with her clipboard.
"The quarterly audit for the regional rescue fund is complete," Maeve said, handing him a neatly bound report. "We’ve successfully rehabilitated and rehomed forty-three working dogs from abusive situations across three states this quarter alone."
Dante glanced at the figures, his dark eyes reflecting genuine pride. "When I started this foundation with you, I hoped we’d make a difference. I didn't realize we'd change the entire state's animal welfare standards."
"People respect results, Dante," Maeve said softly. "Especially when they come with financial backing from Philadelphia's most reformed businessman."
Dante smiled, closing the folder and setting it aside. "Speaking of business, the Board of Trustees has invited you to the annual charity gala in the city this Friday night. As guest of honor."
May you like
Maeve hesitated, raising an eyebrow. "A mafia-adjacent charity gala? I don't own a ballgown, Dante."
"Consider it part of your official duties as chief director," Dante replied smoothly. "Besides, you’ll be escorted by the safest man in Pennsylvania. And, of course, Argos will be holding down the fort here."
