Chapter 9 - The Wedding Hall of Mirrors

On Sunday evening, twenty-four hours later, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was illuminated by massive crystal chandeliers.

Over three hundred members of New York's elite—politicians, judges, real estate tycoons, and high-ranking syndicate leaders—had gathered for the annual Sutton Philanthropic Gala.

Victor Sutton, a tall, imposing man of sixty-five with slicked-back white hair and a tailored tuxedo, stood near the center stage, sipping scotch with the Manhattan District Attorney.

Beside him stood Claire Sutton, wearing an exquisite emerald green gown, her smile bright and radiant as she accepted congratulations from guests on her upcoming wedding to Adrian Vale.

"Where is Adrian?" the District Attorney asked Claire politely. "I thought he’d be here tonight."

Claire offered a sweet, tragic sigh. "Oh, you know Adrian. His... condition makes large social gatherings very difficult for him. Daniel Mercer is bringing him in through the private service entrance in a few minutes just to sign the charitable land transfer."

Victor Sutton smiled, patting his daughter's shoulder proudly. "The boy does what he’s told. That’s what matters."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the grand ballroom swung open.

The string quartet stopped playing.

A sudden, heavy hush washed over the three hundred guests in the room.

Walking down the center aisle, entirely unassisted, was Adrian Vale.

He didn't wear the quiet, reserved expression of a disabled man being led by his manager. He wore a custom charcoal suit, his head held high, his dark eyes burning with absolute, terrifying power.

Behind him walked ten armed federal agents, accompanied by the chief of the FBI's New York Field Office.

Claire’s smile froze. Her glass of champagne slipped from her manicured fingers, shattering against the marble floor.

Victor Sutton’s face flushed a deep, dangerous purple. "What is the meaning of this?!" he roared, stepping forward. "Adrian! Why are federal agents in this ballroom?!"

Adrian stopped ten feet from Victor and Claire.

He pulled a small wireless microphone from his coat pocket, clicked it on, and brought it to his lips.

His deep, powerful voice echoed through the massive crystal speakers of the Plaza Hotel ballroom, shattering three years of silence in a single, magnificent second:

"Good evening, Victor."

The entire room let out a collective, deafening gasp.

Claire backed away, her hands covering her mouth, her eyes wide with pure, unadulterated terror. "A-Adrian... your... your voice..."

"My hearing was restored forty-eight hours ago, Claire," Adrian spoke clearly into the microphone, his voice bouncing off the high gold ceilings. "And my memory of the night my brother was murdered has never been clearer."

Victor Sutton stepped back, his chest heaving as the FBI agents moved in, surrounding him and his daughter.

The Chief FBI Agent stepped forward, pulling a thick stack of federal arrest warrants from his jacket.

"Victor Sutton, Claire Sutton," the agent announced loudly, his voice echoing over the silent crowd. "You are under arrest for federal conspiracy, wire fraud, corporate espionage, and the capital murder of Julian Vale."

"This is an outrage! You have no proof!" Victor screamed as an agent forced his hands behind his back, clicking steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"Dr. Raymond Warren and Daniel Mercer have spent the last twelve hours filling six notebooks with proof, Victor," Adrian said softly, stepping closer to the disgraced tycoon. "Including the bank routing numbers for the hitmen you hired in Philadelphia."

Claire wept hysterically as an agent cuffed her hands, her emerald dress crumpled as she was led away down the center aisle in front of three hundred of New York’s most powerful citizens.

She looked back at Adrian one last time, her eyes pleading for mercy.

Adrian didn't say a word. He simply watched her go, his restored hearing soaking in the glorious sound of justice being delivered.
