Chapter 5 - The Gift in the Hallway

After breakfast, Claire left for a spa appointment in Manhattan, leaving Daniel in the main study to handle the weekly logistics ledgers.

Adrian walked slowly down the long, carpeted corridor toward the residential quarters of the staff.

He turned the corner near the service pantry and stopped.

Hannah Parker was on her knees, scrubbing the baseboards with a sponge, her bucket of soapy water beside her. Lily was sitting on a low stool nearby, coloring in a worn book with a blue crayon.

When Lily saw Adrian, her face lit up with an effortless, bright smile. She dropped her crayon and stood up.

Hannah quickly stood, wiping her wet hands on her apron, her face anxious. "Mr. Vale... I’m so sorry, we’re almost done here—"

Adrian raised his hand, gesturing for Hannah to relax.

He crouched down until he was at eye level with Lily.

The little girl reached out, pointing at his left ear, then made the sign for Quiet?

Adrian didn't use sign language this time.

He leaned in close to her small ear. He kept his voice low—a deep, gravelly baritone that had not vibrated through a human throat in over one thousand days.

"I can hear you, Lily," he whispered.

Lily’s eyes went wide as saucers. She gasped, covering her tiny mouth with both hands, her dark eyes sparkling with absolute, childish wonder.

Hannah froze. Her bucket brush dropped into the soapy water with a splash. She stared at Adrian, her jaw open in absolute shock.

"Mr. Vale... you... your voice..." Hannah stammered, tears instantly springing to her eyes.

Adrian stood up slowly, looking at Hannah.

"The child saved my life, Hannah," Adrian said, his voice quiet, rough from disuse, but carrying an unmistakable weight of supreme authority. "And she saved this estate."

Hannah covered her face, letting out a ragged breath. "They... they were hurting you?"

"They were trapping me," Adrian corrected softly. "Daniel Mercer plans to move you and Lily to the Queens warehouse quarter on Monday to get you away from this house."

Hannah’s blood ran cold. She knew what the Queens warehouse quarter was—a grim, industrial wasteland controlled by the lower-tier operatives of the Vale organization. It was no place for a child.

"No... please, Mr. Vale," Hannah pleaded, taking a step forward. "Lily didn't mean any harm—"

"You're not going to Queens," Adrian said, his eyes darkening. "You and Lily are under my personal protection. From this second forward, Marcus Vance will guard your quarters twenty-four hours a day. No one touches you. No one speaks to you without my permission."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, plush black bunny—one he had instructed Marcus to buy from the high-end boutique in town two hours ago.

He handed it to Lily.

Lily clutched the plush toy to her chest, beaming up at him. She leaned forward and used her hands to sign: Thank you, my friend.

Adrian offered the little girl a rare, genuine smile—the first real smile that had touched his face since the day his brother died.

"Thank you, Lily," he whispered softly.

Then, he turned and walked back toward the study, his eyes cold as ice, ready to construct a trap that would tear New York apart.
