Chapter 4 - The Whispering Table

By 8:00 a.m. the following morning, Claire Sutton arrived at the estate for their scheduled weekend breakfast.
Claire was stunning. The thirty-two-year-old daughter of the Sutton real estate dynasty looked effortless in a cream-colored cashmere sweater and gold jewelry. She walked into the sunlit dining room with the practiced grace of a woman born to rule New York high society.
Daniel Mercer walked beside her, carrying his usual leather-bound folder and tablet.
Adrian sat at the head of the long oak dining table. His right ear was still plugged, maintaining his complete hearing loss on that side, but his left ear was open—though hidden behind a thick tuft of his dark hair, which he had styled lower than usual.
To the room, Adrian was still the deaf monster sitting in total, powerless silence.
Claire sat to his left—ironically, right beside his newly restored ear.
She leaned over, kissed his cheek politely, and smiled. Her lips moved, forming the clear, exaggerated shapes she always used when looking directly at him: "Good morning, Adrian. You look tired."
Adrian gave a single, slow nod, playing the quiet beast he had been for three years.
Then, Claire turned to Daniel Mercer.
She picked up her crystal glass of orange juice, took a slow sip, and spoke in her normal, un-exaggerated, casual voice—a voice Adrian had not heard since the summer before the bomb blast.
"Did Warren drop the solution this morning?" Claire asked Daniel smoothly.
Adrian’s pulse didn't spike. His eyes remained fixed on his plate of poached eggs. But inside, his blood turned to pure liquid fire.
"Yes," Daniel replied, sitting across from her and opening his tablet. "Warren was a bit rattled, though. He said the maid’s toddler was wandering around the room during the exam."
Claire let out a soft, elegant laugh. "A toddler? Daniel, why are we letting housekeepers keep children in this house? It’s sloppy."
"I'll have Hannah Parker and her kid transferred to the Queens property by Monday," Daniel said casually. "We don't need distractions right now. Not with the port agreement being signed on Thursday."
"Good," Claire murmured, slicing into her fruit. "My father spoke with the waterfront commission yesterday. Once Adrian signs the transfer papers for the Brooklyn piers on Thursday, the Sutton network will hold sixty percent equity. Adrian will still think he owns the controlling interest because of the translated summary you give him."
Daniel smiled faintly. "He trusts me implicitly, Claire. He has no reason not to. The man lives in a box. He only knows what I write on this tablet."
Claire reached across the table, laying her hand over Adrian’s cold, resting hand.
She looked straight into his dark, unblinking eyes, her face a mask of sweet, devoted affection.
"You poor, broken man," Claire whispered softly in a voice laced with subtle, poisonous venom, while her lips exaggeratedly formed the words: "I love you, my darling."
Adrian stared at her.
He felt her warm, delicate fingers touching his skin. He heard her sweet, melodic voice pouring her treachery directly into his newly opened ear.
He didn't flinch. He didn't pull his hand away.
For three years, these people had believed that removing his hearing had stripped him of his power. They had forgotten that before Adrian Vale was deaf, he had built an empire on patience, calculation, and absolute ruthlessness.

They think I live in a box, Adrian thought, his heart beating with a cold, rhythmic precision.
They don't realize I've just been handed the key.
