Chapter 6 - The Trap set at the Family Summit

On Friday morning, unaware that the audio file existed, Bethany sent a final, triumphant message to Kallie via Uncle Arthur’s legal office.

They invited Kallie to a "Family Resolution Meeting" at Uncle Arthur’s law suite in downtown San Diego. The message made it clear: if Kallie showed up, signed a formal statement admitting she had "misunderstood" the incident, and agreed to drop all civil and criminal complaints, the family would refrain from suing her for defamation and would grant her a modest sum from the family trust.

Kallie replied with a single sentence: “I will be there at 2:00 PM.”

At 1:55 PM, Kallie walked into the sleek, glass-walled conference room on the sixteenth floor of the downtown high-rise.

Sitting around the polished mahogany table were Bethany, her father, Seth wearing a sharp corporate suit, her sister Megan, and Uncle Arthur in his expensive legal attire. They looked confident, relaxed, and triumphant—the picture of a powerful family that had successfully crushed a rebellion.

“Kallie,” Uncle Arthur said smoothly, gesturing to the empty leather chair at the foot of the table. “Thank you for being sensible and joining us. We have the settlement and retraction documents ready for your signature.”

Seth leaned back in his chair, a smirk gracing his lips as he drummed his fingers on his soda cup. “Glad you finally grew up, Kallie. It was getting embarrassing for everyone.”

Bethany smoothed her designer jacket, looking at Kallie with condescending pity. “We always knew you’d come to your senses, sweetie. Family is family, after all.”

Kallie didn't sit down. She stood at the end of the table, holding a small, sleek black laptop.

“Before I sign anything, Arthur,” Kallie said calmly, “I want everyone in this room to confirm their official stance on what happened last Sunday.”

Uncle Arthur tapped his pen on the legal notepad. “Our stance is documented in the official sworn affidavits submitted to the police. Paisley tripped over a chair, lost her balance, and hit her cheek on the coffee table. Seth tried to catch her. You misconstrued the physical contact due to parental panic.”

Kallie turned her gaze to her father. “Is that your sworn statement, Dad?”

“It is,” her father said firmly, folding his arms. “And twenty witnesses will testify to it in court.”

Kallie turned to Seth. “And you, Seth? You never slapped Paisley?”

Seth laughed softly, shaking his head. “I never laid a finger on her in anger, Kallie. You made the whole thing up because you’ve always been jealous of my success.”

Kallie looked at her mother. “And you, Bethany? You never defended him hitting a two-year-old?”

“I would never allow anyone to harm my grandchild!” Bethany declared indignantly. “You are the one who caused her trauma by screaming and dragging her out into the cold!”

Kallie nodded slowly. She opened her laptop, facing the high-definition screen toward the entire room, and clicked a small blue play button connected to a portable Bose speaker.
