Chapter 2 - The Gaslighting Campaign

By eleven o'clock that evening, Kallie had arrived back at her small two-bedroom apartment in North Park. She put Paisley to sleep in her crib, locking every window and deadbolting the front door.
She sat at her kitchen table with a hot cup of tea, watching her family’s group chat implode.
Having realized that Kallie wasn't responding to private texts, Bethany had taken the battle to the extended family group chat—a chat consisting of twenty-five aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents.
Bethany: Family, I am so embarrassed to share this, but Kallie has completely lost her mind. She had a hysterical breakdown today over a tiny discipline moment. She took Paisley and vanished, and now she’s threatening to lie to authorities to ruin her own brother’s reputation.
Seth: I literally just put my hand out to stop Paisley from falling, and Kallie started screaming at me. She’s completely unstable. Honestly, I think she needs psychiatric help.
Aunt Linda: Oh dear... Kallie, honey, family comes first. Don't let a little misunderstanding destroy your brother's future. He’s starting his new corporate job next month!
Kallie felt a cold, sharp laugh bubble up in her chest. For years, this was how the Vance family operated. Whenever Seth made a mistake—whether he crashed a family car at nineteen, stole money from his cousin’s wallet, or got kicked out of college for fighting—Bethany and her father would rewrite history, framing Seth as the misunderstood victim and gaslighting anyone who demanded accountability.
Suddenly, her phone screen lit up with an incoming call from an unknown local number.
Kallie hit record on her secondary tablet before swiping the screen open. “Hello?”
“Kallie,” her father’s booming, authoritative voice rang out through the speaker. He was using a guest phone at his house. “Listen to me carefully. Two police cars just pulled up outside our driveway.”
Kallie kept her voice icy cold. “Good.”
“Have you lost your mind?!” her father roared, forgetting to maintain his calm persona. “Officers are standing in my living room questioning Seth! They’re talking about misdemeanor child abuse charges! Do you have any idea what a police record will do to Seth’s career? He just got hired at a major wealth management firm!”
“Seth shouldn't have struck my two-year-old daughter in the face,” Kallie replied, staring at her laptop screen where she was uploading the hospital’s forensic discharge papers.
“It was a slap! A teaching moment!” her father yelled. “She’s TWO! She doesn't even know what happened! She won't remember this next week!”
“I remember it,” Kallie said. “The doctor remembers it. The police officer who took photos of the bruise remembers it.”
There was a sudden shuffling on the line, followed by her mother’s high-pitched, manic voice. “Kallie! I am your mother! I am telling you right now, you will go down to the police station tomorrow morning and tell them it was a complete misunderstanding! You will tell them you overreacted because you were tired!”
“No, Bethany,” Kallie said, dropping her mother's formal title. “I won't.”
“If you don't drop these charges,” Bethany hissed, her voice dropping into a terrifyingly cold, malicious whisper, “we will hire the best family lawyers in California. We will take Paisley away from you. We’ll tell the court you’re mentally unstable, isolated, and unable to financially support her. We have twenty witnesses from that party who will swear under oath that Seth never touched her!”
Kallie reached over, making sure the red recording bar on her tablet was flashing steadily.
“Is that a promise, Mom?” Kallie asked softly.

“It’s a guarantee,” Bethany spat before slamming the phone down.
Kallie stopped the recording, saved the audio file as 'Mother_Extortion_Threat_11PM.mp3', and backed it up to three separate secure servers.
