Chapter 9 - The Birthday Promise

The following month arrived, bringing with it Lily’s seventh birthday.

This year, there were no massive, overwhelming crowds, no chaotic family expectations, and no toxic relatives lurking in the hallways.

Instead, Mike and Sarah had rented out a cozy private shelter at the local botanical gardens. Twelve of Lily’s school friends, along with their parents—including Amanda Cole and her daughter Chloe—gathered around long picnic tables decorated with fresh wildflowers, bright ribbons, and yellow suns.

In the center of the main table sat a magnificent, two-tier chocolate cake covered in yellow buttercream and handcrafted fondant sunflowers, made personally by Maria from Sweet Dreams Bakery.

Lily stood in front of the cake, wearing a yellow party dress, her cheeks flushed with excitement as her friends clapped and sang "Happy Birthday" at the top of their lungs.

When the song ended, Lily closed her eyes, blew out all seven candles in a single breath, and made her wish.

The kids cheered wildly as Sarah began slicing the cake.

Mike walked over to his daughter, kneeling down beside her. "Happy birthday, my big girl. What did you wish for?"

Lily leaned in close, whispering into his ear with a bright, secretive smile. "I wished that every birthday could be just like this one."

May you like

Mike felt a warm lump form in his throat. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close into a long, loving hug.

"I can promise you that, sweetheart," Mike whispered back softly. "Every single year."
