Chapter 10 - The Foundation of Family

Late that evening, after the party had ended and the kids had gone home exhausted and happy, Mike walked down the quiet hallway of his house.

He stopped outside Lily’s bedroom door, which was cracked slightly open.

A soft yellow nightlight cast gentle shadows across the room. Lily was fast asleep under her cozy duvet, clutching Button her new stuffed unicorn in her arms, her breathing slow and peaceful.

On her bedside table rested a framed photo taken earlier that afternoon: Lily, Mike, and Sarah, covered in cake frosting, laughing wildly under the bright summer sun.

Mike stepped into the room silently, leaning down to pull the blanket up over her shoulders, gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair from her forehead.

"Goodnight, my brave little girl," he whispered softly.

He walked back into the living room, where Sarah was sitting on the sofa, scrolling through the photos on her phone. She looked up, holding out her hand to him.

Mike sat beside her, resting his head against the cushions as she leaned against his chest.

Through the tall glass patio doors, the autumn moon shone brightly over the backyard garden, illuminating the small wooden bed where the first green sprouts of Lily’s sunflowers were beginning to break through the dark, rich soil—strong, unyielding, and reaching toward the light.

Mike wrapped his arms tightly around his wife, closing his eyes with a deep, profound sense of peace.

The storm had passed. The toxic cycles had been broken forever. And in their place, a real family—built on love, protection, and unwavering truth—stood unbreakable, ready to welcome every bright morning to come.
