Chapter 2 - The Digital Echo

By six o'clock the following morning, the sun rose over a quiet neighborhood, but inside Mike's house, no one had slept.
Mike sat at the kitchen counter with a hot cup of coffee, watching the morning light filter through the window. The deflated balloons had been cleaned up, the paper plates binned, but the emotional stain on their home remained palpable.
Suddenly, Sarah walked into the kitchen holding her iPad, her face pale.
"Mike," she said softly. "Look at this."
Mike took the screen. Karen hadn't taken the video down. In fact, overnight, the situation had exploded into a nightmare.
A popular local anti-bullying advocate and parenting blogger named Amanda Cole—whose daughter attended Lily’s kindergarten class and had been at the party—had screen-recorded Karen's video before Karen could delete it. Amanda had reposted it on her own public platform with three hundred thousand followers, adding a blistering caption:
'This is what unchecked childhood cruelty looks like, fueled by narcissistic parenting. Watch this mother laugh while her nephew destroys a six-year-old's birthday cake and tells her to eat out of a toilet. This family needs to be held accountable.'
The post had gone wildly viral overnight. Over fifty thousand shares. Thousands of comments were pouring in, exposing Karen’s full name, her place of employment, and Dylan’s school.
"Oh, God," Mike muttered, rubbing his temples. "This is getting out of hand."
"Karen brought this on herself," Sarah said coldly. "She wanted views? Now she has them."
Before Mike could respond, loud, frantic banging echoed from the front door, rattling the glass frame.
Mike walked down the hallway and pulled open the wooden door. Standing on the porch was Karen. Her hair was disheveled, her makeup smeared, and her eyes bloodshot with rage and panic. Dylan stood behind her, looking confused and frightened, clutching a portable gaming console.
"You ruined my life!" Karen shrieked, pushing past Mike into the entryway before he could block her. "You and your psycho wife!"
Sarah walked into the hallway, crossing her arms tightly. "Get out of my house, Karen."
"My boss just called me!" Karen screamed, her voice cracking hysterically. "I was suspended from my job at the medical clinic pending a human resources investigation! People are calling my office! They’re leaving hundreds of one-star reviews on my company page! Dylan's school principal emailed me ten minutes ago demanding an emergency meeting!"
Mike stood his ground, his physical frame towering over his sister. "You posted the video, Karen. You sat there laughing while your son tormented Lily. What did you think was going to happen?"
"It was a joke!" Karen yelled, tears finally spilling down her cheeks—not tears of remorse, but of pure humiliation. "He’s an eight-year-old boy! Do you have any idea what this is doing to his mental health?! People online are calling him a monster!"
"Then stop raising him to be one!" Sarah shouted back, stepping forward. "You have spent eight years letting Dylan bite, push, destroy, and insult everyone around him while you laugh and call it 'personality'! Yesterday, he crossed a line. You humiliated our daughter in front of her friends, and now the world is seeing who you truly are!"
Dylan stepped out from behind his mother, his face twisting into that same ugly, angry scowl. "I hate you!" the eight-year-old screamed at Sarah, throwing his gaming console directly at her feet. It shattered against the hardwood floor. "Lily is a baby! Her cake was stupid anyway!"
Mike stepped between Dylan and Sarah, his gaze dropping onto his nephew with absolute sternness.
"Dylan," Mike said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Pick up your broken toy, go out to your mother's car, and do not speak another word in this house."
The authority in Mike's voice was so stark, so foreign to a child who had never heard the word 'no,' that Dylan actually flinched. He looked at his mother for backing, but Karen was too consumed by her own panic to defend him.
"Mike, please," Karen whimpered, her tone suddenly shifting into desperate pleading as she realized her usual intimidation tactics weren't working. "Talk to that blogger. Tell her it was a misunderstanding. Tell her to take the post down! My career is on the line!"
"No," Mike said smoothly. "I won't lie for you anymore, Karen."
May you like
"Mike! I'm your sister!"
"And Lily is my daughter," Mike replied, pointing a finger toward the open front door. "Leave. Before I call the police for trespassing."
