Chapter 8 - The Return of the Heiress

Three weeks later.

The dark clouds over New York had finally parted, revealing a crisp, brilliant autumn sky.

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was illuminated by massive crystal chandeliers. Hundreds of powerful men and women in floor-length gowns and tailored tuxedos filled the room—the leaders of the Four Remaining Syndicate Families, high-ranking politicians, judges, and influential business moguls of the East Coast.

Tonight was the emergency meeting of the Commission.

A tense hush fell over the crowd as the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.

Victor Moretti stepped into the room. He wore a flawless black tuxedo, looking every bit the sovereign ruler of New York's underworld. But for the first time in twenty years, Don Moretti was not walking alone.

Beside him walked me.

I wore an elegant, floor-length dark emerald silk gown that complemented my eyes. My dark hair was styled in soft waves over my shoulders, and resting proudly against my chest was the silver Rossi locket, polished and gleaming under the brilliant chandelier lights.

In Victor’s broad arms was nine-month-old Lily, wearing a soft white dress, staring with wide, curious eyes at the grand room around her.

Gasps echoed through the room as old men who remembered the Rossi era recognized the crest dangling from my neck.

"It's Elena Rossi's daughter..." an old mob boss from Brooklyn whispered, his hand shaking as he took a sip of champagne. "She's the spitting image of her mother..."

Victor led me up the marble stairs to the raised dais at the front of the ballroom. He stood before the microphone, his powerful gaze sweeping over the hundreds of intimidating figures standing below us.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the Commission," Victor's voice boomed softly through the speakers, carrying absolute authority. "Twenty years ago, a lie was told. The Rossi family was declared extinct, and their legacy was buried under fire and treason."

He reached out and gently laid his hand on my shoulder, presenting me to the room.

"Tonight, I present to you Hannah Rossi—the daughter of Elena Rossi, and the sole legal heiress to the Rossi estate and the Five Families' founding charter."

A murmur of shock and anxiety swept through the crowd.

An elderly man in a dark suit—Don Carmine of the Staten Island family—stepped forward, his brow furrowed.

"Victor!" Don Carmine called out. "If she is the Rossi heiress, then she holds the ledger! That ledger contains information that could destroy every family in this room! Are you handing her over to the Commission?"

Victor took a step forward, his eyes turning to icy steel.

"I am handing nothing over, Carmine," Victor stated flatly, his voice ringing through the silent hall. "The Rossi ledger has been placed into a secure, automated offshore trust. If any person, any family, or any syndicate attempts to harm Hannah Rossi or her daughter Lily, the entire ledger will be instantly released to the Department of Justice."

The room went dead silent. The bosses stared at Victor in absolute shock. He had essentially placed an impenetrable shield around me and my baby—a shield powered by the threat of total destruction for anyone who crossed us.

"Furthermore," Victor continued, his voice softening slightly as he turned to look at me, "the Moretti family and the Rossi estate are officially merging. I am stepping down from all illegal syndicate operations. All shipping, construction, and real estate assets will be converted into legitimate, public corporations managed by the Rossi Foundation."

Gasps filled the room once more. The feared crime boss was officially going clean.

"And lastly," Victor added, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a simple, breathtaking diamond ring, turning to face me directly in front of the entire underworld assembly.

My breath caught in my throat. My eyes widened in complete shock.

Victor dropped to one knee before me, holding the ring up, his blue eyes locked onto mine with endless devotion and tenderness.

"Hannah," Victor said softly, his voice echoing through the silent ballroom. "For twenty years, I lived in the dark. You and Lily saved my soul. You brought light into a life that was dead. I don't ask for your hand because of your bloodline or your mother's legacy. I ask because I love you with everything I have left in this world."

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy welled up in my eyes, spilling down my cheeks.

"Will you do me the honor of allowing me to spend the rest of my life protecting you, loving you, and being a father to our sweet Lily?" Victor asked, his voice trembling slightly.

The entire room held its breath, waiting for my answer.

I looked down at the man who had pulled me out of the snow, who had risked his life, his empire, and his blood to save my baby. The cold mob boss was gone—standing before me was the man I had fallen deeply, completely in love with.

"Yes," I whispered, tears pouring from my eyes. "Yes, Victor! A thousand times yes!"

May you like

Victor stood up, slipping the diamond ring onto my finger, pulling me into a warm, fierce embrace, kissing me deeply as the entire ballroom erupted into thunderous applause.

Lily let out a happy squeal in Victor's arm, clapping her tiny mittens together as the crystal chandeliers glittered above us like a thousand falling stars.
