Chapter 3 - The Stand at the Bridge

"Brace yourselves!" Nina screamed, slamming her foot down onto the accelerator.
"Is she insane?!" I shrieked, pulling Lily into my lap and ducking behind the reinforced front seat.
"She’s following orders!" Victor snapped, reaching across me to pull a heavy steel partition up between the cab and our seating area.
Outside, a brilliant streak of yellow fire erupted from Lorenzo Valenti’s shoulder. The rocket roared through the blizzard, missing our roof by inches and detonating against the suspension cables of the bridge above us. The massive steel structure groaned violently, concrete dust and twisted metal raining down onto the roadway.
BOOM!
Our Suburban smashed straight into the gap between two of the construction trucks. The armored frame of our vehicle absorbed the monstrous impact, air bags deploying in the front cab while the heavy chassis ground through the metal obstruction in a spray of sparks.
We broke through, spinning onto the slippery Jersey side of the highway, but our front axle snapped with a sickening metallic CRACK. The Suburban slid sideways, slamming into the snowbank at the edge of the palisades, coming to a dead stop.
Smoke poured from under the hood.
"Out! Everyone out now!" Marco yelled, kicking his damaged door open.
Victor grabbed my arm, shoving the rear door open into the howling wind. Snow instantly stung my face like sharp needles. Lily began to cry loudly, frightened by the roaring wind and the smell of burning oil.
"Nina, Marco, establish a defensive line at the treeline!" Victor ordered, pulling me out of the wreck and sheltering me behind his body. "We make for the secondary safehouse in the woods!"
Behind us, three black luxury sedans pulled up to the bridge wreckage. Men in dark coats spilled out, heavy rifles raised, led by Lorenzo Valenti himself.
Lorenzo was in his late fifties, with a silver beard, a scar running down his neck, and eyes that held the cold, unfeeling cruelty of a shark. He didn't run. He walked slowly across the snow, a heavy chrome pistol held lazily at his side.
"Victor!" Lorenzo’s booming voice carried across the roaring wind. "Give it up! You're stranded on a ridge with a broken vehicle and a dying baby! Is this how the Great Don Moretti ends? Dying in a ditch for a maid and her bastard child?"
Victor turned around slowly, stepping out from behind the wrecked SUV into full view of Valenti's armed men. He held no rifle, only his sleek handgun, his dark suit dusted with white snow.
"Lorenzo," Victor called back, his tone disgustingly calm, almost conversational. "You always were terrible at math. You brought twenty men to a bridge. Do you know how many men I have watching this county?"
Lorenzo laughed, a dry, raspy sound. "Your men are back in Manhattan, Victor! You're alone!"
"Am I?" Victor lifted his left hand, pressing a button on his smartwatch.
From the dark, snow-covered forest lining the highway, dozens of green laser sights suddenly appeared through the fog. One by one, tiny crimson dots pinned themselves onto the chests and foreheads of Valenti’s men.
From the shadows of the trees, thirty heavily armed soldiers in white winter camouflage stepped out, their rifles locked onto Lorenzo’s crew.
Lorenzo’s laugh died instantly in his throat. His men froze, looking around in utter panic as they realized they were completely surrounded in an open kill-zone.
"You think I took the bridge by accident, Lorenzo?" Victor said, taking a slow, measured step forward through the snow. "I knew Vance was your rat two weeks ago. I let him think he was setting a trap for me today. The moment Hannah entered my mansion, my tactical force was already moving into position along this river."
I gasped, staring at Victor’s back in absolute disbelief. He knew? He knew all along?
Lorenzo’s face turned bright red with rage. "You son of a bitch! You used the girl as bait?!"
"I didn't know who she was until thirty minutes ago," Victor replied, his voice dropping to an icy edge. "I thought Vance was sending a low-level assassin. But when I saw Elena's locket... I realized God had given me a chance to settle our debt twenty years late."
Victor raised his gun, pointing it directly at Lorenzo's chest.
"Drop your weapons, Lorenzo," Victor commanded. "Or your blood will stain this bridge before the snow covers it."
Lorenzo stared at the laser dots covering his body. Sweat beaded on his forehead despite the freezing temp. Slowly, reluctantly, he opened his hand and let his chrome pistol drop into the snow. His men immediately followed suit, tossing their rifles onto the ground.
"You think this wins the war, Victor?" Lorenzo hissed, his eyes burning with toxic hatred as Marco and Nina rushed forward to bind his wrists with heavy steel cuffs. "The Rossi ledger... the girl has no idea what it is! The moment the other Four Families find out Elena’s heir is alive, they will burn New York to the ground to get her!"
Victor walked right up to Lorenzo, leaning in close.
"Then let them try," Victor whispered coldly. "Because from this day forward, Hannah and Lily are under the protection of the Moretti name. Touch them, and I will erase your entire bloodline from history."
Victor turned away without waiting for a response, walking back to where I stood huddled in the snow.
"Is she alright?" Victor asked softly, looking down at Lily.
"Her... her fever feels lower," I stammered, my body shaking uncontrollably from the cold, the adrenaline, and the sheer shock of everything I had just witnessed. "Victor... did you really use me as bait?"
Victor looked down at the snow, a faint shadow of shame passing over his face.
"I didn't know who you were, Hannah," he said quietly, reaching out to wrap a warm wool blanket around my shivering shoulders. "If I had known you were Elena's daughter... I would never have let you come anywhere near that mansion today. Forgive me."
He held out his hand to me.
"The medical helicopter is landing at the landing pad nearby. Let's get your daughter to safety."

I looked at his outstretched hand. He was a dangerous man—a monster to his enemies, a king to his empire. But looking at the genuine pain and fierce protection in his eyes, I knew he was the only thing standing between my baby and a world that wanted to consume her.
I took his hand.
