CHAPTER 8 — The Family That Owned Too Much

Within twenty minutes, the hospital corridor filled with quiet movement.
Not chaos.
Control.
Men in dark suits with government badges.
Military police.
One federal attorney.
And one woman I recognized immediately.
Agent Laura Kim, Criminal Investigations Division.
Margaret Prescott noticed the shift first.
“What is this?” she demanded.
Laura Kim didn’t look at her.
She looked at me.
“Colonel Hart,” she said, “we’ve been tracking financial coercion patterns linked to the Prescott estate for six months.”
Brandon scoffed.
“This is insane. We are one of the most respected families in—”
“Silence,” Laura said simply.
Not loud.
Not dramatic.
Just final.
Ethan took a step back.
For the first time, his confidence cracked.
“What are you accusing us of?” he asked.
Laura opened a file.
“Extortion. Coercion. Witness intimidation. And unlawful confinement.”
Margaret’s face tightened.
“This is a misunderstanding. We will have this dismissed within hours.”
I finally spoke again.
“You threatened a military officer’s daughter.”
The room went quiet.
Not because of my rank.
But because of what that meant.
Laura turned slightly toward Margaret.
“Ma’am,” she said, “you should have chosen your enemies more carefully.”
Brandon laughed once, but it sounded forced.
“You think the government will destroy a family like ours over one woman?”
Laura met his eyes.
“No,” she said. “We’ll do it over evidence.”
She nodded.
The door opened.
A young woman entered.
Emily froze.
“Lena?” she whispered.
The woman nodded shakily.
“I worked for them,” she said softly. “I was told to monitor Emily. Her messages. Her movements.”
Ethan snapped, “You were fired—”
“She wasn’t fired,” Laura interrupted. “She was protected.”
Lena’s voice trembled.
“They said if she left Ethan, they would ruin her career, expose fabricated evidence… and send private security to make sure she never testified.”
Emily’s breath hitched.
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
Not rage.
Precision.
Margaret tried to recover.
“This is all fabricated.”
Laura looked at her.
Then pressed play on a recording.
Ethan’s voice filled the room.
Cold. Calm.
“If she leaves, make sure she disappears from public credibility. We cannot afford scandal.”
Silence.
Ethan went pale.
Brandon stepped back.
Margaret finally stopped speaking.
May you like
For the first time, she understood something she had never considered:
She was not in control anymore.
