CHAPTER 12 — HOME AGAIN

Three months later.
Emily stood in a small sunlit apartment near base housing.
She was laughing.
Actually laughing.
The first time in a long time.
A knock came at the door.
She froze.
Then looked at me.
I opened it.
A federal attorney stood there.
“It’s over,” he said.
Ethan had pleaded guilty.
Brandon was under investigation.
Margaret had agreed to a full financial restitution settlement.
Emily exhaled shakily.
“I don’t want them near me ever again,” she said.
I nodded.
“That’s your right.”
She stepped forward.
And hugged me tightly.
“Mom… I thought no one would believe me.”
I held her.
“You called the right person.”
She laughed through tears.
“I called you.”
I closed my eyes for a moment.
Every mission.
Every deployment.
Every sacrifice.
All of it led to this moment.
“I told you once,” I said softly, “nothing in this world is stronger than a mother protecting her child.”
Outside, the wind moved across Fort Liberty.
And for the first time in a long time…
I believed it was true.
ENDING — JUSTICE, NOT REVENGE
The Prescott name disappeared from political influence lists within a year.
Emily began therapy.
Then college classes.
Then volunteering with domestic abuse support services.
And I stayed.
Not as Colonel Hart.
Not as an officer.
But as her mother.
Because some wars are not fought overseas.
Some are fought in silence.
And some are won…
May you like
the moment a daughter finally says:
“Mom… I need help.”
