Chapter 3 - The Trap in the Hallway

The tension in the attic hallway solidified like cooling lead.

Marco’s face went entirely slack. "No... no, that’s impossible. Leo? My brother was at the crash site with us! He helped pull the scorched bassinet out of the ravine!"

Lorenzo didn't speak immediately. His arm held his daughter securely against his chest, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of her tiny heart against his own. The puzzle pieces that had refused to fit for eight long months were suddenly slamming into place with terrifying clarity.

The ambush on the Verrazano coastal road. The truck that appeared out of nowhere. The fact that the attackers knew the exact, unscripted route Isabella’s security detail was taking back from the private clinic.

Only three people had known that route: Lorenzo, Marco, and Leo.

"Marco," Lorenzo said quietly, his voice dangerously low. "Where is Leo right now?"

Marco reached for his walkie-talkie, his fingers visibly trembling. "He’s... he’s downstairs. He’s stationed at the perimeter gates, securing the reception guests."

"Call him up," Lorenzo ordered. "Tell him we found an intruder in the servant quarters. Do not tell him about the child."

Marco looked at Lorenzo, a look of profound, agonizing betrayal washing over his features. Leo was his blood. But Marco was a man of honor, born into the syndicate, bound by oath and loyalty to the DeLuca crest. He pressed the button on his radio.

"Leo," Marco said, forcing his tone to remain flat and authoritative. "Get up to the fourth-floor attic. Now. We have a security breach in the maid's quarters."

A static crackle answered from the speaker. “Copy that, Marco. Moving up now.”

Lorenzo turned to Sophia. "Take Emma and step into the side bathroom. Lock the door. Do not come out until I tell you to."

Sophia nodded frantically, grabbing her three-year-old and scrambling into the tiny adjoining bathroom, sliding the deadbolt home.

Lorenzo walked over to Marco, hand still cradling his daughter's back. He handed the baby to Marco. "Hold her. Keep her behind you."

Marco took the infant with trembling hands, cradling his boss's child against his bulletproof vest, his eyes burning with tears of absolute shame for his brother's treason. "Lorenzo... if Leo did this... if he took your daughter... I’ll kill him myself."

"No," Lorenzo whispered, stepping toward the wooden attic door frame, his silhouette blocking the dim hallway light. "You won't kill him. He’s going to tell me where Isabella is first."

Marco froze. "Isabella? But... Lorenzo, we found Isabella’s body. You identified her necklace—"

"We found a body burned beyond recognition with a silver swallow necklace around her neck," Lorenzo interrupted, his voice dropping an octave into pure ice. "If they stole my living daughter from that car to use as leverage, they didn't burn Isabella. They took her too."

The sound of heavy, rapid footsteps echoed up the wooden attic stairwell.

A man stepped into the hallway—tall, athletic, wearing a tactical suit with a ear-piece coiled behind his neck. It was Leo. He was holding a suppressed handgun low at his side, his eyes scanning the narrow corridor.

"Marco? What’s going on?" Leo asked, stopping six feet away. "The security feeds near the ballroom went down—"

Leo’s words died in his throat.

Lorenzo stepped out of the shadow of the doorframe. He wasn't holding a weapon. He didn't need one. His presence alone filled the narrow corridor with a suffocating, predatory dread.

Behind Lorenzo, Marco stepped into view, holding the eight-month-old baby girl wrapped in her pink blanket.

Leo’s eyes landed on the baby. All the color drained from his face. His hand twitched around the grip of his pistol.

"Eight months, Leo," Lorenzo said, taking one measured step forward. "You kept my daughter in my own home, under my own roof, while I buried an empty box in the dirt."

Leo’s breath hitched. He realized in an instant that his lie was dead, his leverage destroyed, his life forfeited. Panic seized him. He raised his suppressed pistol directly at Lorenzo’s chest.

"Don't move!" Leo screamed, his voice cracking with desperation. "Don't come any closer, Lorenzo! I swear to God I'll put a bullet through you!"

"Leo, no!" Marco yelled from behind, trying to shield the baby with his body. "Drop the gun, you idiot!"

Lorenzo didn't stop. He didn't flinch. He walked straight down the barrel of Leo’s gun, taking slow, deliberate steps until the cold metal silencer was resting directly against his own forehead.

"Shoot," Lorenzo said softly, looking into the eyes of his traitorous security chief. "Shoot me, Leo. Because if you don't kill me in the next one second, I am going to tear your life apart piece by piece."

Leo’s finger quivered on the trigger. Sweat poured down his temples. "You don't understand... they paid me tens of millions, Lorenzo! They promised me control of the docks!"

"Who?" Lorenzo asked, his tone as calm as a graveyard. "Who paid you?"

"If I tell you, he’ll kill me anyway!" Leo sobbed, the gun shaking violently against Lorenzo's forehead.

"He might kill you," Lorenzo whispered, reaching up with lightning speed, grabbing Leo’s wrist, and twisting it back until the bone snapped with a sickening crunch.

Leo screamed, dropping the gun as he was slammed face-first against the attic wall, Lorenzo’s massive hand clamped like a vise around the back of his neck.

"He might kill you," Lorenzo repeated into Leo’s ear, pressing his weight until the traitor could barely draw air. "But I am Il Silenzioso. And I will make you beg for the mercy of death before this night is over. Where is Isabella?"

Leo choked, his legs thrashing against the floorboards. "She's... she's alive!" he gasped out, his air cutting off. "The Don... Don Salvatore... he has her at the private clinic in Upstate!"

Lorenzo’s eyes flared with a lethal, absolute dark fire.

Don Salvatore. The head of the rival Moretti syndicate—the old man who had sat in the front row of the funeral ballroom downstairs ten minutes ago, offering his fake condolences with a sly, wicked smile.

Lorenzo pulled Leo back, tossing his limp, broken body to the floorboards at Marco’s feet.

"Marco," Lorenzo ordered, turning around. "Take my daughter down to my private study. Lock it down with twelve loyal men. If anyone approaches that room, kill them."

"And what about you, boss?" Marco asked, holding the baby tight, his face hardened with absolute resolve.

May you like

Lorenzo picked up Leo's suppressed pistol from the floor, pulled back the slide to check the chamber, and clicked it back into place.

"I’m going back down to the memorial," Lorenzo said coldly. "And I’m going to pay my respects to Don Salvatore."
