Chapter 4 - The Broken Vase

The true test of Abigail’s tenure arrived on a rainy Thursday afternoon, three days after her employment began.

The wind howled off the Atlantic, driving sheets of gray water against the conservatory windows. Inside, the grand hallway was filled with the frantic shouting of the twins. A dull, heavy thud echoed through the stone corridor, followed immediately by the shattering of crystal.

Pedro bolted out of his study, taking the grand staircase two steps at a time. By the time he reached the second-floor landing, he found Ben and Jerry standing frozen near a shattered antique crystal vase—a priceless heirloom that had belonged to Clara’s grandmother.

Jerry was sobbing quietly, his hands shaking, while Ben stared at the glittering shards on the Persian rug as if he had just committed an unforgivable crime.

Footsteps approached from the hallway. Abigail walked up, her expression calm, taking in the scene without a single trace of panic.

"What happened here?" Pedro demanded, stepping forward, his protective fury surging. He looked at his sons, expecting them to crumble into hysteria.

"We were running," Ben whispered, a tear slipping down his cheek. "We weren't supposed to run in the hall. We hit the table."

Pedro opened his mouth to dismiss it, to wave his hand and tell the staff to clean it up and bill his account. He reached for his standard defense mechanism—money fixes everything.

Abigail stepped past him, kneeling directly onto the Persian rug amidst the dangerous shards of crystal. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't look at Pedro for approval.

"Accidents happen when we don't pay attention to our surroundings," Abigail said steadily, looking up at the two trembling boys. "The vase cannot be replaced. But the mess can be cleaned, and responsibility can be taken."

She reached out and handed a small dustpan and a hand broom to Ben.

"You broke it together," Abigail said quietly. "You clean it together. Carefully. Step by step."

Pedro held his breath, waiting for the inevitable explosion of grief and anger from the twins. Instead, Ben wiped his nose with his sleeve, took the broom, and knelt down beside the glass. Jerry grabbed the dustpan, his small hands steadying as he helped his brother sweep up the remnants of their mistake.

Not a single scream was uttered. Not a single tantrum was thrown.

Pedro stood frozen on the landing, watching his sons handle a crisis with more emotional maturity than he had managed in the two years since their mother died. He looked down at Abigail, who stood up gracefully, brushing her skirt, and felt a profound, unsettling shift in his chest.
