Chapter 2 - The Hound Unleashed

The beast did not bark. War dogs trained in the deepest black-market kennels do not waste breath on noise when the kill order is implied.

With an explosive snap of muscle and sinew, the massive mastiff launched itself from the boss's boots. It crossed the distance between them in a single, terrifying bound, its jaws wide, aimed straight for K19’s gun hand.

Bang!

A panicked shot went wide, punching a hole into the ceiling as K19 tried to swing his weapon down. But he was too late. The dog’s heavy jaws clamped down hard around K19’s wrist with the force of a hydraulic press.

A sickening crunch echoed through the private club, followed by a sharp, piercing shriek of agony. K19’s pistol clattered uselessly onto the concrete floor, spinning away into the shadows.

—Get it off me!— K19 screamed, stumbling backward, crashing into a heavy mahogany table and sending glasses and bottles shattering across the room. —Shoot the damn dog! Shoot it!—

None of the men fired. The sudden, violent eruption of action broke the spell K19 had cast over them. They stood frozen, their weapons wavering in their hands, staring in shock as their former leader writhed on the floor with the war dog standing over him, one massive paw planted squarely on K19’s chest, its teeth bared inches from his jugular vein.

—Lower your weapons,— the boss commanded. It wasn't a request. It was an absolute law of nature, carved into the stone of the city's underworld over twenty years of blood and iron.

Slowly, almost mechanically, Leo lowered his gun entirely, letting it hang by his side. The other men followed suit, their shoulders slumping as the adrenaline began to fade, replaced by a cold, heavy wave of realization. They had almost murdered the only man who stood between them and total annihilation.

K19 clawed at the floor, his face pale, sweat pouring down his forehead, blood dripping from his shattered wrist. —You... you don't understand,— he gasped, looking up at the circle of men who had trusted him just minutes ago. —He's weak! He brought a baby into the war! He's lost his edge!—

—I lost my edge?— The boss walked forward, his steps measured and heavy. He didn't look at K19; he looked at the men. —You think a child is a weakness? You think hiding an innocent soul from the butchers who wiped out her family is a sign of a broken empire?—

Leo swallowed hard, his voice barely a whisper. —Whose... whose child is it, Boss?—

The boss stopped a few feet from K19, looking down at the traitor with a gaze so cold it could freeze fire.

—It belongs to the only man in this room who had the courage to look at the syndicate's future and protect it,— the boss said, his hand gently patting the wool blanket over the sleeping infant. —Three weeks ago, an assassin squad hit the safehouse of our chief financial auditor in the northern district. They slaughtered everyone. Man, woman, child. Except for one.—

The boss paused, letting the silence settle heavily over the room.

—K19 didn't just want to take my throne,— the boss continued, his eyes locking onto Leo's. —He wanted to erase any trace of his own financial embezzlement. He hired the hit squad that hit that safehouse. He thought they killed everyone. But they missed the cradle.—

K19’s eyes widened in sheer terror. —That’s... that’s a lie! He’s making it up!—

—Is it?— Ghost’s voice crackled back through the speakers, accompanied now by the sharp click of digital data loading on a mainframe. —I’m routing the offshore bank records to all of your personal phones right now. Take a look. Notice how K19’s private accounts swelled by four million dollars the exact morning after the northern district safehouse burned down?—

A dozen phones buzzed simultaneously in the pockets of the men around the room.

Leo slowly pulled out his phone, his thumb unlocking the screen. His eyes scanned the financial ledger glowing in the dim light. The numbers didn't lie. The offshore routing numbers, the timestamps, the signatures—it all pointed directly to K19.

The air in the room grew suffocatingly thick. The men who had been ready to execute their boss a moment ago now turned their blistering, murderous glares down at the man pinned beneath the war dog's paw.
